Minnesota!

Mine are all from tractor supply so the coloring is across the board according to standards but I agree, they are pretty. I also haven't had the poor temperament that some people talk about. They keep a wide berth to me when I'm around but they are nice to their flock mates.
Yes, I think I have said it before, those SLWs from hatchery stock are notorious snots toward other chickens. I swear, every one someone tells me about or they call me about that his beating up and drawing blood on other birds is an SLW hen.

I lost a Bantam Salmon Faverolle today. I combined a pen of three pullets with two crossbreed pullets. The Favs had pecked up tails so not long feathers to sufficiently cover their butts. It looks like the two little black crossbreeds decided that the Fav butts were something to peck at. So, one is dead and the other two I had to pull back out and they both had bloody butts. I sprayed them with BlueKote and we will see if they make it through tomorrow. I may end up losing them both. So, SLWs aren't the only snots that will be aggressive.

Alas! Out eagle/unknown aerial predator has returned and claimed a Wyandotte this time

she was out in the open, probably didn't stand a chance

it breaks my heart. The conversation with DW went like this:
DW: that d***ed eagle was back
Me: poor chicken
DW: I'm so made I want to shoot it!
Me: but that is illegal
DW: so what it ate my lovely hen!
Me: you have never even held a gun before
DW: I could learn
Me: does this mean I can buy a shotgun?
DW: *Glares*

Apparently that was the wrong answer. The girls will be locked up the next few days again, supposed to be cold and wet anyhow. The girls can enjoy there covered runs now

Sigh... I know it's part of chicken keeping but still...

Oh and on top of that, today I learned my coworker who I've been working elbow to elbow with for 5 years took a new position so will be leaving me in a couple weeks. So it was a stressful day to start with
Well, you can't blame a guy for trying.
I can appreciate your wife's frustration, but you are right, it comes with the territory if you are free ranging especially. I don't think Conrad is doing his job, or big Buck. They should be calling those ladies in when danger flies overhead. I know I hear those dino growls when anything passed anywhere near my pasture, and everyone flies or runs for cover.

Nothing like feeding hay in the pitch black!!
Don't you know you are supposed to be doing that stuff during the daylight hours? ;) I should have also unloaded my feed during the daylight hours, but it was pitch black doing that. I also was planting the rest of my daffodil bulbs in the dark with my headlamp on since it is supposed to rain like crazy here tomorrow. I have some other bulbs I may just put in big pots so I can have them by the door in Spring.

klopklop and Minnie, so sorry about your birds.

Minnie, when you plant tulips in a big pot, do you leave the pot outside all winter long? bury it in hay? I did get my bulbs in Sat but barely. Have to go to FF today, and you know they will probably have bulbs on clearance. Mine often get eaten by the deer but I like seeing them the few days that they survive.

waiting for daylight....want to let the flock out to eat fresh green grass and clover and all, for a bit before I head down to the cities to spend time with baby. My daughter asked if I could come hold baby so she could try to sleep. I figure it is the last time the flock will have greens before a hard freeze. I can't believe I still have stuff growing!

It's hard to believe that will actually happen.
