Alas, my leghorn didn't make it

I put her in the corner of the coop this morning so she would be out of the way but be able to get some room to move when everyone went outside. She kind of huddled down and watched the flock. When I got home tonight it looks like she never even moved. Just tucked her head over passed away

maybe she just needed to see the flock one last time. Breaks my heart but at least she isn't hurting any more.

So sad. Sorry KlopKlop.

Double :-(.
Major bummer.

Am awake because the coyotes are serenading us and Rosie is answering and notice the lights in the coop are on.

Makes me think dear mother has been messing with the switches.

Sleep deprived chickens?

Goldie update, on yesterday, Day 12:
Yesterday she ate mealworms happily. Some scattered grains in the dry grass lining her coop. A little apple.

Researched and found on byc a bunch of hens savaged by dogs with similiarly horrific injuries. And guess what? Many won't eat anything for a couple of weeks but: watermelon or apple, grass or kale, and mealworms. Isn't that interesting? And then they gradually start eating other stuff, often around day 15-20.

Who knew? And also, it appears dog attacks are about the number 1 predator by far, which makes sense because the number of dogs near chickens has to exceed any other predator.

So, I spent hours on amazon trying to find the right worm purveyor and ordered 1,000 more meal worms. could not find the link on this thread to the worms...I think I will go to the grocery store and get a melon, wouldn't you think melon would work just as well as watermelon, except for not being red? I'm thinking no watermelon in the stores this time of year.

Goldie clucks to the other chickens, is leery of the boss hens (being an ee, she is fairly low on the totem pole), and while moving stiffly doesn't show signs of bad pain, that is she isn't panting, and her eyes aren't dilated. I am sure she doesn't feel good. She does flap her wings, stretch, and grooms a lot (molting).

So I am a little relieved, and optimistic. Somewhere around xmas, she should be able to leave her kennel and really rejoin the flock. I will have to bring her in for a good round of bluekote to protect some wounds but most are under her wings. And I believe with colder weather coming, I'll hit the thrift store for a baby shirt to put on to help with a little warmth because of all the bald spots. we'll see.

lucky you. I hardly hear coyotes or wolves anymore, too many hunted in the past couple of years . (wolves trapped by fed authorized trappers because of livestock depradation).

I always wondered about sleep deprivation when hens have lights on all night, but...who knows?
Sue has a dog named Rosie. We picked up a calendar at Sausers, which is a 100+ yr old hardwarestore in PIne City, and Rosie took exception to it and ripped it to shreds. Doesn't rip paper or magazines, so we think maybe someone handling it with greasy fingers? or some scent that bothered her. She has some hound in her.
