Welcome to the thread!Hello, New Brighton Here.
Hey Everyone,
So, I just ordered chicks for February. I have been reading on here how some people are brooding their chicks right in the coop. Granted I have not seen many from MN doing this. What do you all think? My coop is not insulated and I do not have any heat. I was planning to get a sweeter heater to brood the chicks. Do you think if I put the heater in the coop and make a brooding area the chicks would do alright in our Minnesota winters? Any advice is welcome. This will be my first go at day old chicks.
thats a hard one. Is her/his comb a lot brighter than the others the same age? I see some feathering on the saddle close to the tail that makes me think possibly rooster. If you look real close at the feathers where hackles usually are, sometimes you can see from the ends whether it is a roo or hen. Rooster has a more pointed end on those feathers, while hens have a rounded end like your fingers have a rounded end.
I think I would eat that .. LOl..![]()

Pullet or rooster?
My concoction of the day: whey, rolled oats and butternut squash with a few cooked spaghetti noodles
I'm in the same boat as lala... the saddle feathers look roosterish, but it'd be nice to see it in comparison to other chickens the same age. I am really not good at determining gender though, so don't count on anything I say!
I'm really rooting for her, so I like updates!Goldie day 12 update:
are you tired of reading about this? I'm tired of it!!
I don't know. That hen does not really want to eat. I am working from home today so later I can take her meal worms and see....she was eating a dried up birch leaf so I threw some scratch in her cage and she ate a little of that. will not eat the other stuff, except for apple...I can't find anything online about hens not eating at this point. She has a few droppings so is eating a little, but the droppings are small reflecting how little she eats.
Now that the snow has melted, I found a spot with a zillion feathers where the dog must have grabbed her. Seeing that many feathers makes me think she should be dead. Which is what I think everytime I look at her wounds
Off to search the emergency thread to see if I can find any suggestions on what to do. Probably just have to be patience, which is something I totally lack.
