Goldie day 12 update:
are you tired of reading about this? I'm tired of it!!
I don't know. That hen does not really want to eat. I am working from home today so later I can take her meal worms and see....she was eating a dried up birch leaf so I threw some scratch in her cage and she ate a little of that. will not eat the other stuff, except for apple...I can't find anything online about hens not eating at this point. She has a few droppings so is eating a little, but the droppings are small reflecting how little she eats.
Now that the snow has melted, I found a spot with a zillion feathers where the dog must have grabbed her. Seeing that many feathers makes me think she should be dead. Which is what I think everytime I look at her wounds
Off to search the emergency thread to see if I can find any suggestions on what to do. Probably just have to be patience, which is something I totally lack.
I did it and would prefer to never do it again... it was hard to do at Ralphies but I think it was easier because it wasn't one of my own... Well my girl Butterscotch the one that has had all the problems,,, i went to the run this morning to feed and water and noticed there was almost nothing left to her head I could see her eyeballs but her head was bloody with huge holes it was not good.. I think maybe she scratched till it bleed and the other girls must have did the rest. I didn't see any sign of entry from an animal and everyone else looked good. So i knew what needed to be done. I made a killing cone out of a milk jug and screwed it to the tree. I went to the coop and said Pooper Pack and yes she came right to me,,,she always has, she is the only one that does... so I picked her up and held her. when she started cooing it just about broke my heart. Anyways it was over very quickly...
I was going to take her to the U of M but I just couldn't i dug a big hole by the Cherry Tree...
2 hens in 1 wk... to hard...

If you are going to brood outside in Minnesota in February, I would do Mama heating pad. Here is a spectacular thread on it: Mama Heating pad in the brooderHey Everyone,
So, I just ordered chicks for February. I have been reading on here how some people are brooding their chicks right in the coop. Granted I have not seen many from MN doing this. What do you all think? My coop is not insulated and I do not have any heat. I was planning to get a sweeter heater to brood the chicks. Do you think if I put the heater in the coop and make a brooding area the chicks would do alright in our Minnesota winters? Any advice is welcome. This will be my first go at day old chicks.
Looks great to me! Do you have hardware cloth around the bottom half of your run though? if not, I would think about it. I can't tell from the photo... looks great though!
Oh, no KlopKlop, I'm so sorryAlas, my leghorn didn't make itI put her in the corner of the coop this morning so she would be out of the way but be able to get some room to move when everyone went outside. She kind of huddled down and watched the flock. When I got home tonight it looks like she never even moved. Just tucked her head over passed away
maybe she just needed to see the flock one last time. Breaks my heart but at least she isn't hurting any more.![]()
