If one really wanted to allow visitors to enter the area with their flock, another option is to buy a box of plastic boot covers. They are clear and go over shoes or boots, then you secure them up on the leg. I have thought of getting them for when the vet comes out and so I can allow some folks to see the birds, but haven't done it yet. The vet though brings a bucket and brush and sanitizer and cleans his boots before and after he comes into the place. However, we were notified last year that we would not be having inspections of the our properties due to the AI outbreaks. I haven't sent in my paperwork yet for my certification stuff yet, so I am not sure how they are going to deal with it now. I am planning to have my flock AI tested though so I can have the flexibility to ship eggs out of state.
We were AI tested twice last year by county vets. Both times they parked out on the lane and put on a full body Mylar suit with gloves and boot covers. Everything covered but the face. Then after I helped take samples they went back to the truck and sprayed down with something, sanitizer of some Kind. They de-suited and left the suit wrapped in a sealed bag for me to burn with trash. It was enough to make me feel good about them coming and going and not leaving anything bad
That's because you are within a stone's throw to some turkey confinements, I bet. I was not in any of the control zones, so they just left me alone. I think the vet stopped here in January and did his inspection as usual and that was before any outbreaks. I need to have him show me how to do the AI swabbing so I can do that every 90-days.
They are handsome fellas. Do you have any problems with them and chickens together?
There was a barn near here that tested positive so they tested any farms within 8 miles. We were right on the line of having to be tested. Fortunately it was just the one and didn't spread here
