Minnesota!

hard to tell with viruses - how they are transmitted. I don't know for certain whether you can bring a virus with you but I think so, because mareks virus lives for years. It is in the dander shed with the feathers. It isn't killed by cold. There is a disinfectant, virkon, that supposedly kills it.

I don't have enough of a medical background to know, thats for sure!
Sounds like something that would be interesting to research. Seems any showings would be a death sentence if it was so easy to spread. Plus I want to know so we can all get together sometime.

Lala Princess seemed like a suiting name for her I thought and her sister/friend is named Angel. But I wont get into all the cow names or I will be typing for awhile.

Thanks BR! The three Mottled aren't mine. But the Calico is mine!

well, if we had a get together, I could be sure I was wearing clean clothes and shoes, and I could drive to a different house and pick up/borrow a different vehicle that hadn't been at my place, changing into freshly laundered clothes there. I think that would be safe enough, but who knows? and it seems most people believe that mareks is everywhere already....

lol, or we could all go around wearing moon suits.

Where did you get a Tarentaise? And Gelbvieh? Beautiful breeds!

My grandpa got her from his friend who got them from my grandpas other friend. She was the only purebred one left. The rest were sold. So we got her calf who was out of a Gelbvieh bull. Tarentaise are my favorite breed. I have to get good pics so u can see the amazing details in the face.

@minniechickmama do you get your local vet to do all your testing? Who does npip in our area, or how does that even work?

@lalaland I didn't think about that aspect. That makes sense!! Maybe that's why my flock has done well. I haven't had any sudden deaths, I did have one young hen have something very similar to mareks, but in the end run I believe it was a genetic factor because only the birds from the same shipped in eggs had any issue. No other young birds the same age, unvaccinated, suffered any issues. They are all big and healthy. What I was wondering is if birds can be born with an inability to process certain minerals or vitamins, like some people. That little chick and her sister's symptoms mimicked a mineral deficiency even though they had access to everything. It was really confusing. Needless to say, they didn't make it... only keeping strong birds.

It's so good to see folks keeping breeds that are not common or usual.

Look forward to the photos!
