Hi Ron,
I'm not sure where a broody hens sits in the social structure of a flock. I did not take that into consideration when I posted for a broody hen. I wish I could get my dog to hatch the eggs. He lays on his sofa all day and is thoroughly put out when I make him get up to go outside.
Do you ever hatch eggs in the winter? I have been reading some posts about all the reasons not to hatch in the winter. I do have an incubator, but no good way to keep the chicks while it is cold. I don't know how old they need to be before it is safe to introduce them to the rest of the flock. I had bad luck trying that last summer. The chicks really can't fend for themselves out in the yard.
I don't really know anything about showing chickens because we're not in 4H, (not yet) but my kids bug me about it every year. From what I can see, you need to start those chicks in the winter or they will not be nature enough to be shown. I would love to give them a chance to show soon because my daughter will be entering high school next year and I bet her interest in chickens will diminish fast.
If you think your Redstar would do ok with my flock I would give it a try. I have been lusting after some Lemon Orpingtons and Swedish Flower eggs on ebay. I don't want to bid unless I have a plan. We need some Swedish chicken here in the Chisago area.
Cheers,
Jodi
