Minnesota!

Hi Ron,

I'm not sure where a broody hens sits in the social structure of a flock. I did not take that into consideration when I posted for a broody hen. I wish I could get my dog to hatch the eggs. He lays on his sofa all day and is thoroughly put out when I make him get up to go outside.

Do you ever hatch eggs in the winter? I have been reading some posts about all the reasons not to hatch in the winter. I do have an incubator, but no good way to keep the chicks while it is cold. I don't know how old they need to be before it is safe to introduce them to the rest of the flock. I had bad luck trying that last summer. The chicks really can't fend for themselves out in the yard.

I don't really know anything about showing chickens because we're not in 4H, (not yet) but my kids bug me about it every year. From what I can see, you need to start those chicks in the winter or they will not be nature enough to be shown. I would love to give them a chance to show soon because my daughter will be entering high school next year and I bet her interest in chickens will diminish fast.

If you think your Redstar would do ok with my flock I would give it a try. I have been lusting after some Lemon Orpingtons and Swedish Flower eggs on ebay. I don't want to bid unless I have a plan. We need some Swedish chicken here in the Chisago area.

Cheers,
Jodi

The Forest Lake swap went on last year. There were about half as many people compared to prior years. Everyone had to have proper paperwork. I think it went ok and they will continue to have the swap. There use to be a great swap in Isanti and Chisago. The motto was if you could cage it, you could bring it. There were sheep, goats, kittens (of coarse), geese, chickens puppies, parakeets Ginny pigs and more. The kids and I had so much fun. I can't believe my husband let us go unsupervised. Thanks for responding so I know my post went through.

WELCOME!!

Poultry 5 months of age or older must have a negative Salmonella pullorum-typhoid test conducted within 30 days prior to the sale, a copy of the Minnesota Flockowner Agreement Form/Rapid Whole Blood Test form (LS-00023-09) must be provided at the sale. All adult birds (5+months) must be identified with a leg or wing band.
Hatching eggs and poultry less than 5 months of age must originate directly from a hatchery that is currently permitted by the Board or from a hatchery that participates in an equivalent program in another state that has been approved by the Board. Young birds and eggs must be accompanied by one of the following forms:
1) Poultry originating in Minnesota: Minnesota Board of Animal Health Hatchery Permit Card
2) Poultry originating outside of Minnesota
:
a) Certificate of Veterinary Inspection that includes a Minnesota import permit number
b) National Poultry Improvement Plan Report of Sales of Hatching Eggs, Chicks and Poults (VS Form 9-3), or an equivalent form issued by the state of origin. This form must include a Minnesota import permit number.

Adult poultry (5+months) originating outside of Minnesota must have a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) listing the test type, date, and results. We ask that any out of state buyers call in advance, so a veterinarian can be present to fill out a CVI in compliance with Minnesota State Export laws.

Yeah, but being we're hibernating we should be on the computer MORE hehehe

I kinda wish there was a state by state list of what everyone raises. That way if I wanted something, rather than paying $70 shipping for one pair, I could just drive an hour or two away possibly, and pick up a whole bunch :)

I also wish there were more Sunday swaps. I have Sundays/Mondays off. Hard for me to get Saturdays off =/

Yeah, get off work at 7am, not get there til almost 10 and all the good deals will be gone :( But it's been a good swap in the past. I hate working overnights. Someone find me a 9-5 m-f job that pays well! :D But thank you, I knew Hutchinson was usually in Feb, but hadn't heard when yet :)

@Timbertoes - Moose Lake will be starting up as soon as it gets nice out, first Saturday of every month. Sturgeon Lake will likely not have theirs anymore as the feedmill shut down. Carlton has moved as that feedmill also shut down. Mora should be starting up, and they always have the Wednesday sale that has critters at it usually. Ummm...Can't think of anything else north of the cities off hand. Oh, Houles in Forest Lake?

You do know about the Hutchinson swap on February 19th, don't you? That's a Sunday.
