This makes me really mad. The chicken wasn't "legal" so he killed it and left it for the family to find? Does that mean we can go around decapitating people who aren't here legally? This psycho should lose his job.

Everybody on BYC is taking about the killing. I do not know if the "city" power people realized just how wide spread the killing is.

Now! Tell this boy that is not a pet, and tell him that chicken doesn't feel anything it is an egg laying machine only. Just go ahead, just try. Law or no law. I had geese in the late 60', in an area that did not allow them. All the neighbors loved them and told the police that. They didn't dare take them away. I was told that as long as no complaints, to them they were strange looking dogs, with a wink. I found out the busy body across the street, the one with the hot line to gossip and the police, had called them and told them if they hurt those geese and took the away she would call the newspaper and they would be in ------- . I found the news people there the next day, taking pictures of me going for a walk pushing a stroller and two geese fallowing me up the street. The Robinsdale police was there to serve the people, and the people enjoyed the geese and knew they were pets, not farm animals.

There's definitely better ways of handling this. I think most folks without chickens cannot fathom that they become pets. They are compartmentalized as utilitarian animals. I so strongly believe living In America we should do with our property as we wish. But nonetheless, as I've said before there are laws and ways to reverse them with this whole chicken movement cities are following this popular movement. When you keep animals illegally there will always be the "bored busy body" that turns you in. And an animal who knows you as their keeper gets taken away, hurt or killed. The police officer and the owner of this chicken both at fault.

I bought a bag. On-line the bag advertised was 50# but the bag I bought was 40#. Someone I know that has used it said they thought their birds feathers came in a bit quicker. Since I only used 1 bag don't know. It is a little higher in protein than regular layer feed, 18% but my regular feed which is a grower/finisher is 20%. I feed the grower/finisher, which is also a show feed, to all my birds except the chicks which get chick feed for the first 2/3 months but I show birds at poultry shows.

I used it last fall for our first molt. And I can't really answer this well because I don't have a year to compare it to! Anyways I was preparing this fall and bought another bag. Turns out the whole bag was totally covered in mold inside. ( it was some of the bottom bags of the pallet) Gross! I have yet to exchange it as I'm an hour from town. But I think I'm going to just do a can of tuna fish once a week or so. It might be my year to get something to compare to...
 
You don't need to buy a special feed altogether. What you may want to do is boost the protein during molt. I do this. You can get a game feed and cut it in at a rate of about 1 part game to 3 parts regular lay feed. It is best to look for feeds that have animal protein, but if that extra protein is chicken feathers (feather meal), then you are just as well off with a vegetarian feed since feather doesn't offer a complete amino acid range. Some people feed fish pellets (fish food) as a top dress to add protein. I am curious how much more you would pay for a few bags of the feather fixer vs. buying game to use as an add-to method?
Also, use the freshest feed you can, if it is more than a month old, it is losing it's nutritional value.
