Minnesota!

All makes sense to me too.

I understand you wanting to check it out more. I have no idea what my birds might have but are resistant too. There have been chickens and turkeys on this farm for the last 150 years, since my Great Grandfather first moved here. I am sure there is some bad stuff in the soil that my birds survive, but who knows.

It is a shame we are all afraid to show our birds to others that truly enjoy birds because of disease and parasites. Non-bird people visibly yawn when I start talking and showing them my birds.

I am afraid to go to see others flocks for the same reason. As much as I would like to see them or show off mine.

Good Luck on the Mareks no matter what you decide on my poop.

If you want it I guess I would like to meet in Princeton, if that is not too far out of your way. I am west and south of Princeton.

Ralphie you are confusing me.
No. 1 you are not near Duluth.
No. 2 you are not near Cloquet, but you make reference to shopping at L&M there?
I look forward to Fleet Farm in Hermantown, but there is no stated time frame they have to build or open a store there. It would be very close to me, so I hope it is reality.
I used to buy a lot of feed at Dan's Feed Bin, but no more. I feed a lot of wheat and quality there is not good at all. I discretely brought that up with them, but it seemed as if they could care less. I now buy most of my feed at Widdes in Esko.

Oh! You are so lucky to live on a farm that your greatgrandparents lived on. And it makes me doubly sad that I can't see it. Is there still a barn and an old farm house? or are those long gone?

I went to the feed store today (wore street shoes instead of barn shoes) and I asked the owner about it and she thought I was nuts.

You know, the way people try to keep things so clean for their kids that the kids are developing auto immune things? And the kids that are the healthiest grow up on farms with animals, followed by kids with pets and siblings, followed by only kids with pets, - sickest kids are only child, no pets, in a house with lots of antibacterial soap. Maybe its the same with chickens? the more exposure the healthier the chicken?

I guess that is why chicks I am brooding always get plugs of sod in the brooder. ok, maybe that didn't prevent mareks.

duluthralphie, would you be able to meet on sunday afternoon? or would a weekday be better?

Not meaning to confuse anyone..

I lived the majority of my working career near Duluth and Cloquet. My daughter and most my friends still live up there. I moved here when I got the chance to purchase the "home" property.

I use to buy a ton of stuff at Widdes. Is Jay still there? I assume his Dad is gone by now. I have never bought anything from Dan's feed bin that I know of. I have used Duluthralphie on the internet for over 20 years now. Read the previous post when I answered the last person I confused. I still shop a lot in Duluth area, it gives me a chance to see my grandkids.

Lalaland it is amazing to walk the same grounds my Great-grandparents did. There is only one old building left here. It is an old Granary my Grandpa built. Most of the land has been stolen by the federal government under threat of eminent domain in the late 60's. The rest was sold off in small parcels by my Dad before he passed on. I only have 13 acres left here now, HOWEVER, I am in the process and have been for the last 2 years of remodeling the old farm house we live in. The first part of it was built in 1890.

We love the house. We have put 8-12 inches of insulation in the walls and 12+ in the ceilings. We tore it down to a shell and are basically building a house within the old shell. The old barn burned down about 12 years ago from a lightning strike. It was sad to see it go. All the other buildings I have are relatively modern. 30-40 years old.

Ralphie,Jay is the head honcho at Widdes, and his father has been gone for some time. I just know that Sherburne county is not near to Cloquet, and it seemed strange that someone would come all that distance.

Minniechickiemama, I followed your advice and contacted fowlman01. He agrees with the turkey droppings and also said that the usda advises against mareks vaccinations in small flocks! And it wasn't because I didn't believe you.....

Duluthralphie, I'm going to pm you.

And about roosters: I had this rooster who suddenly took a severe dislike to hens with crests. He was raised with chicks, some of whom had crests (sulmtalers) and when he got about 5 mo old, he started chasing them and trouncing the crap out of them. Not mating, he was doing that just fine with other birds. I culled him, and now have one of his offspring, who last night....took off after two pullets with crests. I mean, beating them up with his wings, etc.

What is it with roosters and crested birds? I think I am having Rooster Corfu for supper this weekend.

I think that happens alot with roosters. One of my roosters doesn't like brown hens and will not let them eat and will beat them if he gets a chance. I only have black and white hens in his pen. We keep him because he is our original rooster that we hatched and is always sweet except his dislike for brown hens. My crested birds are just with crested birds because I've heard from others that non-crested will pick on crested. My Polish roo is not at all nice to one of the GLP hens, but she is at the bottom of the pecking order and rather shunned by most in the pen.
