Heres a dumb question for you. Is a bad mosquito problem bad for the birds?
I do not know this either... hmmm

Well, I did a search, several different things came up about the mosquitoes. Some said no big deal, other said they can get fowl pox, west nile virus, etc. So, I'd say it is probably best to try and limit the mosquitoes in the area if possible?

I am not sure how bad yours are but here in my swamp of MN they are starting to get pretty bad. However, the only birds that seem bothered by the insects are turkeys. Not sure why, maybe it is the exposed skin of the head and neck. I have read that the bugs can start to be a problem around the chickens eyes/face but I have not had that as a problem yet. I don't know though like I said only the turkeys seem to be the only ones being pestered as of right now.

Well, how sad. All the local stores are done carrying chicks for the year! I went to peek at the last shipment last night and nothing caught my eye. My son had asked for something of his own to raise so I was kind of hoping they might have a pair of geese, but alas no luck.

Hi - been a member of the BYC for awhile but most talking guineas and peafowl. I'm in east central MN - close to Hinckley area. I would really like some chickens - lavendar orphingtons and some colored egg layers. Any breeders out there? Also anyone close by need some guinea eggs - mainly for eating but am still finding a few recently laid that might prove fruitful under a broody hen or in incubator.

Hello Mistahbue - I do have lavendar orpingtons. Are you looking for them because you want them for layers or just for the looks of them? Just asking because they are not know for being super layers. I have a rooster and 2 hens along with one splash hen, one black hen and one blue (who is constantly broody). All but the blue are good quality from various breeders in Colorado, Kentucky and Oregon. I have not hatched many this year (just 3), but I could if you are wanting some chicks. I am just south of Duluth - so not terribly far from you. We do go down to Willow River/ Rutledge area occassionally to visit relatives and camp during the summer months.

Our L&M pretty much just special ordered birds in for customers this year - very rarely did they have any extras to buy. Its always fun to see the different breeds and species.

Thanks. I wonder if I put some sort of osilating fan in the coop if that would help a lot.
