I am very jealous. I told myself one day I will have a lake cabin in that area. My grandparents live in Pequot Lakes. I love that area.

I have 37 acres for anything here. It really is good land. My girls and gent have a heated coop from the wood boiler for winter. I would like a few more hens to watch and sit he day away. I have 8 RIR and one Roo

Jen, you may want to rethink heating the coop for winter.

If the heat goes out and they have not acclimatized to the cold they will die.

Also a heated building may be air tight and allow moisture to build up. Granted the heat would take care of some of the moisture, but MOISTURE is our enemy up here.

Okay. This little coop is pretty fancy. Insulated and sided like a small home on a slab. Two small vents at top. One on each side. So. Do you think with that said we should not heat with the heating system it's set up with and go with some lamps in the dead of winter ?

Do you have pictures of your coop?

IMHO 2 small vents will not be enough. BUT I do not heat. matter of fact one of my coops is an open coop. It is an old single car garage and I left the garage door up all winter. My chickens in there had less frostbite than the ones in the "better" coop did. BUT we had a terrible winter with that warm humid weather.

So I just went out and candled the eggs under my two broody hens. 5 eggs looking good under the SLW and 8 good ones under the silkie/icelandic/whatever. I did remove 6 eggs that showed zero signs of development. The hens have been sitting for 9 and 10 days. Are the 6 eggs I removed still fine for my own consumption?

I have two Keets in the hatcher now, I said to my DW, " I don't understand how they are hatching this long after the date on them"

Her response, " well. you were in Florida and I just marked them. Not sure what date I used or when they went in for sure."
