Minnesota!

I got my chickies today! 14 straight run red Rangers. I think one of them might be a different breed though. I tried to add a picture of them but I can't for some reason...

klopklop, so glad your deer encounter had such a good outcome! My passenger side door is bunged in (the better to hear road noise

) from a deer slam a couple of years ago. It was a rainy dark, 4 am morning and that sucker came up out of a deep ditch - I never saw him - and I have to tell you it scared me witless. I screamed. and then screamed again for good measure - I did turn around a mile or so later after I calmed down, and went to see if I could see the deer but didn't find it. Given that it was pouring and dark...don't really know. And I just assume it was a deer because what the heck else would it be?

I carry a high high deductable and since I put some many miles on the car, it wasn't worth it to fix it.

alezaj, have you done red rangers before? and are you doing the for meat?

I have some coming in june and now I'm second guessing myself about getting just pullets, since roosters would have more weight.

I have not raised red Rangers before and yes they are for meat. I got straight run because I wasn't really sure, lol. I asked awhile back about others opinions on this and got 1 answer for each option, so I don't think getting all pullets was a mistake. If they don't get as big as you want just get all roosters next year. That's what I would do.

. Also if they're not coming till June would you be able to change your order if you change your mind?

It could have been Bigfoot....

Sounds just like my morning yesterday. I didn't even see him until he got into my headlights. It was raining and I am on my way to work when the sky is just almost starting to lighten. It is so murky you can't see!

I don't think you will be disappointed if you keep your expectations on level. You aren't going to get a 10 lb dressed red ranger like you would a CX but that doesn't mean they won't be good enough size to eat or any less tasty. In fact people seem to think they are more tasty!

Good morning, folks!

Deer...love seeing them, hate hitting them. My son was driving last winter/spring, it was still cold, and a young one was crossing the road with its momma and we couldn't avoid it. Sadly, it didn't do anything to the car, but it was broken up pretty bad and had to have the State Trooper from town put it out of its misery.
I swear our dogs could smell it on the car the instant we got in the driveway, they had their noses pressed into every inch of the vehicle where it hit.

My good friend had one leap into her windshield on Hwy 52 one more on her early commute to Rochester. She was pretty lucky she got out uninjured.

Other critters in the road.... another time coming up from town and son was driving, a fox ran right out in front of us, stopped on the centerline, and turned right back and went under the van, THEN ran off again after tumbling under the vehicle. I swear it is the luckiest fox! I see that stupid thing running in front of cars all the time in that same spot. It is also nasty and mangey looking and needs a big dose of Ivermectin!

Chickens...I have another batch hatching, just a smallish one though, about 50 eggs went in the hatcher. I was not happy when I candled yesterday though, I didn't get crap for fertility on the batch of 200 I set last week. The NH were good, but the EEs were less than 50%. I should still have about a dozen and a half EEs though. I didn't set any Buckeyes though that time. Oh well, the next batch is about ready to go in.

We did red rangers last year. They have good flavor, but are very tough in the legs and thighs if you free range. Maybe that's the same with everything, but I'm saying really tough. We brought them to butcher and I don't think she gave them time to relax after butcher, so that doesn't help either. I took a cooking class recently at le cordon bleu on cooking chicken just because I thought it was me. One thing I learned that is maybe common knowledge was to roast the chicken breast side down. That way the dark meat of the thighs, legs, etc. self bastes the breast. I also learned how to truss a chicken! :)
