Mites

My hens have mites but I've only seen it on a couple and want to stop it before it spreads. Any ways to get rid of them? I have diatomaceous earth and am going to the feed store today. Any suggestions???

Diatomaceous earth, at least in my experience, will not effectively treat mites. At the most, it can help prevent mites. A better mite/lice treatment would be Sevin dust or poultry dust/pymethrin. Dust all the birds, clean their environment, dust any crevices and the roosts, and then redust the birds about a week later to kill mites hatched from eggs.

And be religious about the time table. Treat, then treat again in 7 days, then treat again in 7 days.

You have to catch the newly hatching mites as the dust only kills the hatched ones not the eggs.

Ok so I got the "gard star poultry dust" and also "poultry protector" are those good or should I get something else? Also how much dust should I put on my chickens? And also do I have to dust everyone? Because I have some 2 1/2 month old chicks and should I dust them too?

Dust all of them.Garden spray is really good.Poultry protector didn't work for me and its hard to spray it on there skin.Cover there hole body with it.

I received information from my State Dept. poultry specialist.
He wrote that we can use Sevin 5% powder or make a spray with the 5% liquid. Or any of the pyrethroids or permethrins we can get from our pet feed store.
Another way is by drowning the little critters. It's takes a few weeks for all the eggs to hatch so you apparently we need to keep treating the affected area.

My compassion was to bring my sick baby Rooster ( now I realize with Marek's) where it was warm, 15 to 20 F outside. yes- in the house. Not smart on my part, scratch scratch.

Ohh hahaha ok I was thinking about bringing my two months old in because it's supposed to get down to freezing point this week here in Texas but if they are gonna spread it should I not bring them in? Also they have no heat lamp because it was not that cold last week but should I still bring them in?

I personally would have you get a heat lamp. Those little critters hide and lay eggs in every crack and I believe the eggs mature in a week or so I am waiting for another infestation. My compassion is making me pay a higher price than a box with a comfortable heat lamp.
