Chapter 13

That's IT! I'm tired of Alastair shunning everyone!
It was a beautiful September morning; bright and vibrant. The perfect morning to canter! I sped along towards Alastair, thinking a plan. I'll have to warm up to it, but I can't be to friendly or he might catch on. He was standing on a grassy knoll staring vacantly into space. I slowed beside him.
"Why hello Alastair." I smiled.
"Hm. I don't have time, Mitty."
"That's ok, but you've been awfully strange lately. Are you sick? I think you are. You better tell me all about what your problems, maybe they are making you sick."
He gave me an exasparated look. "I'm not telling you anything. I know a wheedling mare when I see one - and you need a lot more practice."
I flounced off in a huff! That stallion! Fine. I'll treat him how he treats me. I'll make him really worried...somehow. Running away? To where? No where... Oh, why don't I try to find Lune! Should I bring someone?.... Agnes? Naw...
I turned and trotted through the deep, dry grass towards the grove. As I entered, the atmosphere was happy and bright, the silvery leaves were dancing and the birds were singing. How pleasant! I soaked in the filtered sunlight and then, having my fill walked on. As I got deeper into the grove I realized it wasn't a grove at all, but a forest! The maples, beeches, and willows got replaced by dark pines. The green sunlight suddenly got darker and muted...I trembled. This was not pleasant. The birds were still chattering - whew, that was one comfort. Soon, the pines grew so thickly that I couldn't see good past their branches. I soon decided I better turn around. There wasn't much room to do it and my face got scratched by the pokey branches, but after walking awhile, the pines only grew thicker. Wait! I stopped, my ears twitched. What did I just hear? Voices! Snorts! Horses! I was about to whinny with relief, when something in me decided to wait, and listen. There was something foreboding about this voice. My spine chilled. I peeked past some branches and saw a clearing. Eight treacherous horses stood in a circle. The birds chatters ceased instantly, the forest was dead. There was almost no light this deep in the forest, the only light that did get through was old, and dark. There was light shadows, and dark shadows all in patterns, straining my eyes. One stallion in particular caught my eye. He was pure white, with a scar running down his face. He scared the bejibbers outtas me. There was two black ones, a dark bay, a chestnut, another grey, and a couple others I couldn't see. Treacherous...these horses are treacherous. I listened silently, they were talking in low voices, deep ones. I was getting panicky...don't panic...
