Chapter 14
The heavy scent of pines was intoxicating, making me dizzy. The horses were talking, the big white one with a scar on his face was arguing with the others.
"No, that won't work. So stop talking and listen to me! We'll have to re-think this. Mongol, Celsius, and Lune will stay here with me. The rest of you will need to scout out the best route to B.T." Here he paused and glanced at a big bay stallion "Sheftu, you lead the way."
Sheftu wheeled and let out a bugling neigh that echoed through the forest and bounced off the mountains. Suddenly, dozens of other neighs answered and within ten minutes stallions came from every direction to the clearing.
"Let's go." Sheftu snorted with a throaty growl. He stamped and cantered off, the other ones followed at a great pace. The remaining four - including the one with the scar were pacing nervously. I didn't know how the heck I'd get outta this one. If a made a move, they would sense me immediatley, if I stayed in this one spot, I would explode with frustration. Then, it dawned on me Lune was there too! I heard his name mentioned but was too scared to think about it. Lune was one of them?! These must be the horses he warned me about! He didn't tell me he was one of them. He's a good friend to warn me, even when I was rude.....I can almost forgive him, but no! I have to figger out a way to get his attention to get outta this sick forest!
Lune was on the farthest side of the clearing. A dak bay colt was closest to me. After mulling the situation over I decided to carefully walk just inside the borderline trees all the way to Lune.
I slowly backed out of my tight spot. Looking behind me frequently so I didn't hit a tree. Then safely out of there I studied each place my hooves would step, to make sure I didn't snap a twig. After five minutes this was getting tedious. And I was only half way around to Lune! Two more minutes crawled by...now Lune was only ten feet away. That's close enough I extended my dappled neck and softly knickered.
Lune snapped alert. His ears forward and nostrils quivering, he whispered "Mitty?"
"Yes!" I was trying to stay quiet. "Lune, help me get ou -" I was instantly cut off by something breathing behind me. My hindsight locked gazes with the white stallion with the scar! "NEEIIGHH!" I yelled shrilly.
He just snapped "You better be quiet, or you'll wish you had." The other two stallions towered at my side and pushed me into the clearing.
I was scared. My heart simply stopped beating. Lune was laughing at me until one of the stallions kicked him and told him to "shut up". They drew me to the middle of the clearing and the stallions w/ the scar sarted hammering me with questions.
"Were you listening to us?" His yellow eyes pierced me.
"Ah - " I looked from side to side, " Um, no I wasn't. I was jus -"
He pounced forward and knocked me to the ground, I just stared up at him. Too terrified to move.
"You better listen good gel. I ask the questions, you answer with the truth and nothin' but the truth, hear?"
I nodded vigorously and got up, looking around to see if I might possibly escape, no such luck.
"Now, were you listening to us?"
"Y-y-ye-yes." I stammered.
"What did you hear?" His face was now breathing on mine, his voice was menacing.
"I didn't hear any-anything. No, nothing at all! I was just for a walk and I came upon - uh, Lune over there! I saw hi-"
"Stop your bellyachin' and answer either 'yes' or 'no'. Or I'll beat you up."
"What else do y-you wa-ant to know?"
"Whose herd are you in?"
The dark bay stallion harumphed: "I can't tell, all she smells like is pine trees."
I shot him a venemous glance and straightened my posture, "I don't live in any herd. I'm a loner." I really didn't want to get Alastair involved with this.
"Your lying!"
"I'm not!" I was feeling more like myself, more brave. "and, I'm going to keep defying you...you buzzard because you'll never get any truth outta me!"
The white one was not disturbed. He just hollered for Lune to come over.
"Lune." He scowled, "Do you know this filly? Is this the one you tricked?"
"Yeah, she's the one."
"Why is she here?"
"I dunno, but she sure looked scared when you brought her to the clearing!" He glanced at me with mocking triumph in his eyes.
I was so mad that I flew at Lune with a fury I'd never known! I was kicking him fast, and biting him till he looked all chewed up. "So there!" I yelled, panting.
The three other stallions were laughing till tears came out of their eyes. They were laughing at me?! I then flew at the big white one with flying hooves and I knocked him off balance. But he composed himself quickly and deflected any attacks I threw at him, till I was beat.
Then, he towered over me with anger in his eyes. "Boys, were going to have a little change of plans, since this filly was caught!"
