He sighed, then walked on. What can I do? Will we ever get out of here? Probably not. Oh, I just KNEW something would happen. When those boys are on the move something always does...usually something terrible.
He stopped, and stood before another shroud of mist. He glanced behind to check if everyone was there, yes they were, all is well. He entered the misty veil and as it enveloped him he shuddered. It's icy fingers were touching his body, dragging their fingertips along his coat. His skin crawled, was it him...or was something shadowing him? This cold panic crept into his thought patterns, he had this feeling for awhile now and he couldn't shake it. It was mysterious like his surroundings, and at first he thought it was only his surroundings...but now he was sure. I should act normal as can be. Or whatever it is will be quieter, and even harder to indentify. He mused silently, but was startled as a prickly coat brushed his!
"AHHH!" He yelled, but then his mares all screamed and dashed up close to him.
"Daddy?" A shaky foal crept up to Alastair for his comforting presence.
"Hush, Rinnasa."
"But, daddy!"
"What?" He was glancing around nervously.
"Why did you yell, daddy?"
A bay mare stepped in and nipped her daughter "Rinnasa! No time for that, daddy's busy." She gave Alastair a worried glance as she whispered, "Alastair, do you know where we are? And what brushed past you? I felt the wind of it, and it was strong and fast, I could feel it's fury."
"No time for anything, Melody." He raised his head, and announced: "Girls! Get in position, wait for the attack - if I don't make it, you take the lead, Melody and find a good stallion."
"B-but Alasta-"
"Blast it, Melody!" He roared. She stopped, scared then wheeled. The mares nipped and kicked the yearlings and foals to the middle. Then, hindquarters facing outward they surrounded the youngsters, to repell with their strong hind legs any attack an animal would throw.
The last mare was about to step into her place when Alastair screamed in pain! A freakish creature had cannoned into Alastair like a rock! The force had lifted him off his feet and slammed his body into the ground. The animal was tearing away his skin and seemed mad with anger, Alastair noted that it resembled a wolf in stature, but it's fur bristled like sticks and scraped his bleeding body, making his skin twitch with pain. He was angered and rolled on his side, he'd have just about smashed the animal, if it hadn't been so quick! With fleet paws it sidestepped out of the way, then attacking again so fast and furious that Alastair had all he could do to get up. Once on his feet, he reared and bucked, flinging the unsuspecting thing off his back. It hit the ground with a thud, then he quickly stepped to the animal and bit it's back with crushing force (if you have ever been bit by a horse you know what I mean!) the thing cried in pain and flipped over. Alastair backed away where he could see it better, the forest was dark so all he could really make out was black bristling hair, gleaming eyes, and a thin tail. It hopped to it's feet, then growling it stalked around Alastair. To Alastairs' great surprise it talked!
"Come with me," his deep voice rumbled meancingly. "hurry." Alastair studied him for a great while.
"Why should I come with you?"
"Because," the thing paused and glanced at Alastair with urgency "it's the only way to get out of this forest alive."

Well, if I leave my dear chickens unattended the freakin bobcat will have a buffet this afternoon, so I need to get off within the next five minutes.
