Mixed breeds

I can't really say I like all chickens.

Most of what I have are mutts, that came from a hatchery. Dixie rainbows, BSL, RSL, EE, Dixie rainbow, and CX.

I guess if I had to say I had a favorite, right now it would be BERT, the CX rooster. The CX's are just such unique birds and so shy and loving.

I am loving this thread! This a is pic of my mixed cockrell. The people I got him from are not sure of the mix, but I am thinking maybe Phoenix and Maran given his fuzz feathers on his legs.

I was thinking of hatching out eggs from him and the pullets I have quick are Cochin,EE, barred rocks, Jersey, comets, and a Silkie, a showgirl and a houdan/Silkie mix...

it's so fun when a flock has many different breeds that can come out to many different combinations

Me personally I would very much love to see the chicks that come from me crossing over a rose comb bantam with a Cochin bantam

As promised, my silkie/light sussex crosses (who says little boys can't do big women?)

This is a silkie skin, silkie feathering one but still large fowl.


This one is half silkie skin, half light sussex skin with smooth feathers and a silkie topknot. Again large fowl



This one has light sussex skin and silkie feathering. Again large fowl



The last one has silkie skin and smooth feathering. Again large fowl.

I am selling them so I won't get to see what they turn out like when they are bigger. I may keep one or two (purely for scientific research of course, it's not an obsession.......honest)

Thought I'd add an update on my barnaconas xD they have spots and checkers but mostly super shiny black feathers. Some are super sweet and others are so hyper they just bounce off the walls haha

Ok, not sure if this is the right place for this questions, bust here I go anyway. from what I understand a California white is a cross between a California grey rooster and a white leghorn hen. I have. California white rooster and several hens. When you breed a California white with a California white you don't get more California whites, you get...something else? Is that correct? I hatched 17 eggs. 7 were yellow, 9 were black and one was grey. All the pics of California white chicks seem to be yellow. So I'm wondering what to expect. The whole breeding thing is quite confusing to me so I'm just hoping for a little clarification. Thanks!

There is a california white thread that would probably know a bit more on actual genetics. From what I looked up you're right. A California white is made from a white leghorn and a California grey. The grey is a black sex link which gives a lot of the nice temperment compared to the skiddish leghorns. I think the sex link is what comes through when you breed 2 whites together you have a good 50% turn into black chickens.

California Grey= White Leghorn x Barred Rock.
California White= Cali Grey x White Leghorn

So yes you'll most likely get a colorful bunch. The ones I've seen are mostly either white, white with black flecks, or white with ghost barring( very light barring). I haven't actually seen any blacks come out of the breeding a but I suppose it could happen.
