Mtnviewfarms, I would love to see your new chicken house and run. It sounds beautiful. You should post pics. I know what you mean by this thread making you feel better about having, (or wanting) mixed breeds. Some threads on here it's a dirty word. The American Serama thread can be so harsh that even when you do have Seramas you won't admit it unless you have the best of the best, (which I do not). So trust me, I'm loving this thread too.

I do not have a problem with mixed breeds..... I got a white leghorn/wellsummer mix because I want the egg production but I want the brown color eggs.

OMG! They're adorable, Gardeningmama! You've got to post pictures again when they're all grown up :)
I went to a farm recently and bought two mixes they had running around. I couldn't resist. The first one they had no idea who the parents were, but my best guess was Wyandotte and Polish.
The second had a Black Silkie for it's mom, but not sure about the dad. They are soo.. sweet.

Stumbled across this thread because I have a motley hatchery flock (3 BRs, 2 NH Reds, 1 white rock, two partridge rocks, and one cuckoo maran roo) I picked up ridiculously cheap -- two of them are pushing 3 years old, I'm pretty sure, at least three of them are first years, judging by egg size (and the fact that the eggs have gotten bigger in the six weeks I've had them) -- they truly are a motley crew

and a delight. BUT! 4-5 eggs daily out of eight hens in peak laying season, well... A month and a half of chicken ownership and already I'm getting greedy (those eggs are SOOOO good!) So I'm figuring on culling the "slow" girls late this fall, and in the meantime hatching some mutts who should be just about ready to replace them by December.

It's a pity it's not the other way 'round (NH roo, maran hen) because then I'd have sex-links, but what the heck! Has anyone done a cuckoo maran daddy/anything else mom cross? How'd it turn out? I'm also considering buying just a couple more hatchery chicks (probably cochins) so I can raise a few good brooders along with the mutts. None of my current group seem the least bit interested in momming.

. I lost my white Silkie roo last week. His partner is so lonely. I have ads everywhere for a replacement, but a hen this time. You would not believe how hard it is to find a 3 month old local Silkie hen. Hey, if any of you know someone in this area, keep me in mind.

So sorry for your loss.....

LOL!!! In one sense, absolutely! In another sense, this statement only works if you have a sense of humor

Well think about it. Heritage implies the flock has been passed down from generation to generation or refers to traditon. Mixed bred chickens have been passed down since the beginning of domestication.
