We have a mixed flock of about three dozen chickens (Rhode Island Reds, sexlinks, Wyandottes), a couple of dozen ducks (mostly Campbells and four Muscovies), and a West of England goose and her gosling (just hatched a week ago). We keep the birds for eggs (we sell a few dozen a week), as well as for the sheer joy of watching them. We are on 5 acres, and the birds have one acre to roam and a hoop house (plastic over chickenwire) for night time. We get a dozen or so chicks from the local feed store each spring and raise them in a separate enclosed space for several months so they can eat starter food.
We had a pair of West of England geese, but the male died in a sad accident about two weeks before the female hatched her one gosling (two apparently infertile eggs).
