MJ's little flock

(invoking David Attenborough)

Here we see the intrepid Gallus gallus domesticus, more commonly known as "the chicken", this one a hen, making its weekly exploration of the homo sapiens habitat.

Now, it cleverly camouflages itself among the forest of furnishings, avoiding detection while pursuing the ultimate goal of dietary supplementation through crumb identification.

Here, in a bold stand off with our camera operator, it displays its bright red face, dark hood, and handsomely marbled feathering over pale grey legs. Look at those defensive claws!

Finally, quick as a flash it scurries off in a bid for freedom from observation... And disappears into the mid afternoon stillness.

Farewell until next time, Gallus gallus domesticus.
Oh my gosh; I love this! 🤣

I've started moving the hens favourite feeder from the coop to the run every morning and back at night, and now Mary has a new trick.

She stands in one spot and sips to the left, munches to the right. At most, a small shuffle of the feet is required. Easy peasy.

Clever Mary!

And Mary (of all people) was feeling so healthy, so happy, and so full of enthusiasm, she became momentarily airborne. I kid you not. Her feet were off the ground for about four flaps and she had a look beyond joy on her face.

So cute! I love happy chickens!

i was talking to someone yesterday and it turned out her own dog got among her own hens and shook them. She stitched up the hens with thread from the sewing box.

I was having a very strong response on the inside but I kept my manners.

When I asked do you not have a vet, I got the "they're only chickens" answer.

Then I had an even stronger response and was going to lose my shit, so I said my chickens go to the vet regularly.

I didn't say: Because their health and wellbeing is my responsibility and I haven't studied veterinary science at uni, much less the avian specialisation, so I don't consider myself a chicken doctor.

And then the topic changed. I'm still a little rattled by it.

Before making an opinion, you need to know she's wealthier than I am, though not by a lot. Anyway the chooks ought to have had dog proof housing from the start.
Ugh. How upsetting.
That said, the sewing thread is not totally terrible - she was at least trying to help them. If she boiled the thread to sterilize it (doubtful) I would take my hat off to her!
