MJ's little flock

Sorry, forgot there is no rooster. I'm rather tired. I've had a busy few days.
Well, she produced this egg this morning

I haven't yet peeled the shell off.

She's not doing ok in her reproductive system.

On the other hand, I ate some of Edie's eggs for breakfast. The shells were strong and the eggs were just eggs. So I feel I can rule out diet and other environmental factors as causal.

It's most likely the usual ISA Brown reproductive failure.

Today she's behaving unwell too.

Every once in a while I get one of those here. The girls seem to move on with no issues afterwards. They usually come during the hottest days of the summer.

I would monitor closely what happens in the following days to see if it's a one shot or a trend. I haven't seen anything like the first egg.

I have seen some very strange eggs from my ex-batts, and more frequently as they grew older.

Just to say it doesn't mean imminent death, Cannelle, one of my nearly four years old ex-batts, has been systematically laying eggs that are flat and soft shelled on one side since spring 2022. She went through months of pause during her autumn molt and when she started laying again the first three eggs were normal and they became like this again.

I'll watch for a couple more days and if a third "egg" appears, I'll make an appointment for her.

While she started off a bit down this morning, she perked up as the day wore on. She sat on her nest rather a lot though.

She granted me a short break in her busy eating schedule. She is honestly a garbage disposal machine - she even ate the red peppers that had gone soft in the fridge. Everyone else ignored them.

Awwww such a darling!

It wasn't very wet, so I treated myself and took my early Sunday cuppa outside to watch the hens. It wasn't too long before I was joined by a few chums :)

Yesterday my brother worked a little more on floor panel 4 to make it a better fit. It involved a little repainting, so I'll leave it another week before starting to move hens in. I started working on Jan's special perch by scalding a piece of timber I'll be using as a rafter to suspend her perch from. Next weekend I'll give it 2 coats of paint and the weekend after, I'll mount it then think about how to suspend her perch from it.

By the time her perch is ready, her friends ought to have adjusted to the new roost which might make it easier for her to adjust too.

Edie has already adjusted to using the laundry basket nest in the run.
