I guess it's not unexpected but Joyce died overnight.

Here she is with Katie on Saturday morning.

I sat with her body on my lap for five minutes while her friends said their goodbyes.

Here she is (left) with her bff Christa.

Then I gently put her in a shroud (old pillow case).

Here she is having just shown Christa all about the treadle feeder.

For now, her remains are in the freezer. I won't have time to bury her until Saturday.

Coming home from the vet.

Poor Joyce. Destined from hatch to live a short life.

At least she had an opportunity to study the phenomenon of the front loading washing machine.

Oh that makes me sad. She was such a character. I hope Christa copes with losing her.
This was a lovely tribute to her and includes a couple of my favorite pictures ever (eg the last two).
I must say she was looking pretty good on Saturday so I think we can all take comfort that she was living her full life until the end.

Christa has roosted in the sleepout and I think I'll leave her be for now.

Janet hasn't yet asked to be let out of the run to go roost in the big coop. If she wants to roost with her friends, that's ok with me.
