MJ's little flock

@BY Bob I checked Mary last night and didn't find any sores. But she's missing feathers along her keel, by which I mean there are no discernable new feathers coming through. Lots of new feather shafts elsewhere.

Is that normal? Does anyone know? @Shadrach ?
I've lost track. Is she moulting?

Yes and very downhearted. She sitting around the place much more than she used to. Knowing @BY Bob 's Hattie did similar and was found to have sore joints (was it arthritis Bob?), I became worried about Mary's joints. Hattie also had developed sores on her keel from sitting so much. So last night I checked for sores on Mary's keel and noticed the lack of feathers under there. I can't describe it perfectly but "Leathery" comes closest.

Anyway, Mary did some running yesterday which leads me to think her joints are not the problem.

I'm going with she's moulting and unhappy.

But I'm still curious about her bald keel. Is that normal? Maybe she plucked it when she was broody and the new feathers haven't started yet?

If she's moulting it could just be a patchy moult but from what you write the patch isn't new, so the first thing I would check is are they rubbing against their roost bar when roosting.

I've gone to the beach kiosk for lunch :D luxury!!
