Yep, providing the extra protein, Bob. Have been listening up to all you good people for a while now.I provide extra protein when they are molting. I figure they are using a lot to make all those feathers.

I think we can do twenty comfortably. More than comfortably as they aren't big birds. Anyway, I have nearly 12 months before any of that happens & who knows what the state of my flock will be like then.I should have known. You are not a newbie at this.
You posted earlier about getting more campiness. How big do you want your flock to be?
MaryJanet - I agree with the others an egg tally is a great idea; but just how did everyone get their hens to sign their eggs ?? LOLI'm pleased to say Peggy's laying is slowing down. Two eggs in three days seems to be her routine at present.
Haha that would be a problem in a flock that doesn't have mixed breeds or one where there's just one breed, but the flock isn't watched much eg maybe it's got too many birds for watching.MaryJanet - I agree with the others an egg tally is a great idea; but just how did everyone get their hens to sign their eggs ?? Thats soo coolHaha that would be a problem in a flock that doesn't have mixed breeds or one where there's just one breed, but the flock isn't watched much eg maybe it's got too many birds for watching.
In my case, there are four hens, two of whom lay different coloured eggs. One brown (Janet) and one blue (Peggy). Mary's eggs are white but she's not laying right now. Ivy's not laying yet, she's only a pullet.
You might find they prefer different nest boxes or different times of day for laying, so you may still be able to work out which egg belongs to which hen.Thats soo cool. Sadly I did not realize the benefits of a mixed flock so I jumped in with 10 BSL chicks. Sadly TSC doesn't do pullets often and its usually one of these production sex link hybrids
.
All good suggestions but LOL they are all done before I get up (no I'm not an early riser) and they all use the same box even though they have 4 to choose from. Will have to put a camera in there if I ever want to know whats really going onYou might find they prefer different nest boxes or different times of day for laying, so you may still be able to work out which egg belongs to which hen.
