MJ's little flock

Good evening everyone 😊

I think well-being is essential. Can you take some walks to gain a sense of freedom?

I'm lucky for many reasons. I'm used to working at home and my work is satisfying. I live near a beautiful beach for walks. I have lots of friends and family near and far, and we're all checking in on one another.

On the downside, Janet's moulting too. The henhouse was littered with her feathers this morning. And she's not laying at present. So that's all four not laying. Peggy stopped when she went broody and Ivy hasn't started yet. Also, I let the fodder store person talk me into trying a new type of pellet and only Ivy eats it. I suppose the others might be off their food from moulting and broodiness.

Ivy is my great hope for an egg or two sometime soon. I had to buy eggs yesterday! I'm very grateful to the unknown chickens who laid them but it didn't feel right. I'm used to eggs that have names written on them.
You are so right😊 I am taking daily walks and going farther out on our property. I'm used to only being home for a few hours and now always being here is difficult at time. I wish I had family and friends close by , but I'm such an introvert that I tend to stay away from most-even when we don't have social distancing. I'll make it one day at a time.

our greenhouse where we have some of the birds looks like a pillow right happened from all the feathers! Our Barred Holland's are still not laying, sure wish they would, but the turkeys have started finally.
I refuse to but eggs, I make someone else do it 😁 thankfully, we are getting eggs again from some of them.

I am still managing to get some chicken time most days. If nothing else I always sit with them for dinner & spend 20 minutes or so with them @ roosting usually. This means I am out of the house @ least & with someones who enjoy my company. :D

I read a lot of concern about chickens not laying. Don't people just not eat eggs when the hens are not laying?
I don't eat cherries or pomegranates for examples when they are not in season.
Eating seasonally produced products in the season is something I think people should start thinking about. I know we are used to getting out of season produce through imports and intensive growing conditions but maybe we should be reviewing the wisdom of this.
Some of my habits recall people who I loved and who are now dead. Eggs for weekend breakfast recalls my grandfather. Brewed tea recalls my grandmother. I wear my other grandmother's engagement ring. I could have toast and vegemite on weekends, but eggs feels right to me. I'm sentimental because it gives life's tiny moments greater depth of meaning. So, that my eggs for breakfast story. It's my version of doing as I please.

That sounds lovely. Much better than being indoors all the time.

Also, chickens are very sweet and interesting. I can't think of many better things to do.

I love that. We have our routine here in memory of my grandparents.

Mrs BY Bob brings me coffee in the morning. It started as a joke because my grandfather would bellow at my grandmother, "Bea, bring me some coffee!".

I did not explain this ahead of time to Mrs BY Bob. The first time I took her to meet my grandparents and my grandfather, Harry, bellowed for his coffee, my wife told him "Get up and get your own".

The room went dead silent and my grandmother quickly scuttled to get him some.

Mrs BY Bob did not like that. He could at least ask nicely.

Fast forward a few weeks later on an early Saturday morning. I've woken up but I'm struggling to leave the bed. In walks Mrs BY Bob with a cup of coffee for me, so sweet. I take a sip and being the funny guy that I am I say. "Thanks Bea".

She had already started to leave the room and stopped in her tracks. I immediately begin to regret saying that. I'm worried that she is going to smack the coffee out of my hand.

She slowly turned.

"If you ever"...... and then she started giggling.

This turned into her bringing me coffee on Saturday mornings saying " Here you go Harry" and I would respond, "Thanks Bea".

Over the years it has turned into her bringing me coffee whenever she beats me up in the morning. Always a "Here you go Harry" "Thanks Bea".

My grandparents passed well over 25 years ago but they are still remembered with morning coffee.

Yours is a most impressive well thought out coop design. You definately have an eye for this and are very creative.
Thank you! I did put a lot of thought into it and I do love designing things. I will try and remember your kind words tomorrow as my day is reserved for fixing the hardware cloth to the first open run. The guys say it is too fiddly for them so I am in my own - well with the active help and advice if the Princesses if course!
