Yes, a small marsupial. I think you're right about the Wikipedia pages, they don't provide much of a story. Here's the potoroo's description from the Australian Museum, which is a little more readable I think.

I did deal with a rat too remember - but I found his entry hole and blocked it off early in the war. So now it is just the mice. I am armed and I am ready!

Looking at the distribution map it looks like they may have taken rides on some ships.
