MJ's little flock

What I won't do is buy from back yard breeders who have no idea @ all about the genetics, & take no care or thought for anything but making a quick buck.

I hadn’t really thought about that when I was searching for my Faverolles. Where I ended up getting them from looked liked a good set-up; they were on an actual property rather than just in a suburb and they seemed genuine about being good breeders. They had other breeds as well, they were all kept separate and each breed had their own free-range day so there is no cross-breeding. My friend, the Frizzle breeder is putting a lot of care and effort into her purebred lines, and I know it would have taken her years to get to this point.

My first flock were mostly rescues ~ ISA browns past their egg laying best but all I knew was they were being given a reprieve from the butcher & the pens. I'd never heard of reproductive issues. Now I won't touch them because I am much better informed.

Me too, I am of the same opinion. Although, as I said to @Shadrach , if some rescues materialised and needed a home, I would take them in but I won’t actively buy ex-battery hens again. It’s definitely too heart-breaking (and expensive! $5.00 chickens? Pah!)

Sandy's only one hen among billions bred to produce eggs and be killed at 2. Even so, she was found wandering around the streets and I gave her a home, so both of us have already gained almost a year that we wouldn't otherwise have had.

That's a comforting thought.

She’s lucky to have found you. :hugs

I'm curious and thinking about your friend who breeds frizzles. How old is her oldest chicken?

I would have to ask her, but I’m pretty sure she said she had a 12 year-old rooster who got so excited when she brought leftover sandwiches home, he had a heart-attack and died right in front of her!
