MJ's little flock

Finally got a shot of Fat Bird that shows her feather sheen and that lovely copper in her hackles. Black Marans are not really black at all. Fat Bird has everything from green to blue in there.:love

I have always loved her coloring. She reminds me of someone else. :D

Well, a long time ago when I first came here there was a rooster called Major. He's the rooster in my avatar. Major's brother Oswald was the ladies man and it was Oswald who kept an eye on the hens while Major supervised everyone else.
Major and Fat Bird had a strange relationship. Oswald would bring the hens home in the evening but Fat Bird used to wait for Major before she would go to roost. They were usually the last home. Major was a big chap; too big and mean for the hawks. He didn't move from cover to cover, he just went where he pleased.
I often saw Major and Fat Bird walking up the sheep field track on their way to roost. Major would lead and Fat Bird would sort of amble along behind. Major would have to stop often on route to wait for Fat Bird as she veered off course to investigate some patch of grass or some bug she had seen while Major would wait a few feet in front impatiently tapping his foot.
Fat Bird eats a lot, and I mean a lot. I hadn't picked Fat Bird up and kind of assumed that she was indeed fat. Even Major told me she drove him mad because she couldn't pass by the chance of just one more snack. So, she got called Fat Bird.
She's not fat, she's FLUFFY!

:hugs :hugs :hugs More hugs, MJ ~ & more where these came from if you need them. ;) If you need to talk or vent or just get an extra hug, well, we're all here for you. :hugs
:hugs All the hugs MJ :hugs

VERY IMPORTANT

She is looking good. It's funny how out of balance they look without any tail.
Poor Alice has only one feather left in her tail and is looking very threadbare at the moment.
It doesn't seem to be bothering her too much. She is still feisty and chasing Pepper and Edwina around!

Well, she's always had a cascading tail rather than upright, which is to type for Australian Australorps, but not for American Australorps. Same with her big black eyes.

But her tail feathers are still growing.

This shot is from last winter. She's fully feathered here but without an upright tail. She's always been pink skinned rather than red. She's been wormed and her fecal floats are normal. She goes red when stressed. So mayber she has a circulatory problem.
Anyway, she's rarely stressed and rarely red.
