MJ's little flock

Friends, I'm going to share something with you in the hope it'll help me keep the momentum up.

I have a body that looks like my mum's and my Nana's did and it does not predispose me to strenuous exercise. The nature of my work brings stillness too.

This is a problem in terms of my health and overall well-being. I need to move more.

I've always loved music and dancing. So today I started a new new routine which I hope will stick.

I got up and danced to that James Brown song I shared a few posts back.

I'll do that for a month, then I'll add a second song for the second month, a third song for the third month and so on, until I'm dancing for an hour before my morning shower.

If you want to, feel free to check up on my progress from time to time. I will either use the hiding under the chair emoji or the dancing one 😁
I love this! Small changes can make so much difference 💜
I started ‘eating clean’ and more regularly at the start of August (lots of wholefoods instead of junk/heavily processed foods) in an effort to lose the bit of extra bulk. I was 15kg higher than my goal weight of 60.
I also enjoy my Lambrusco of a night but now I have soda water with a splash of that in it which does the trick haha.
Happy to say I’m down 6kg already.
It can be tough at times to motivate yourself but worth it, good job @MaryJanet 😁

I am so impressed.

I totally understand what you're saying, with all my injuries, I've gained so much 😭. I can't go on my walks anymore or do much of anything really. I need to figure out something safe for me to do while I heal.

I'm too heavy but I don't care about it :gig

On the other hand, joie de vivre is a non-negotiable and I need to start investing in my body now to keep my it from giving me sadness later on.

On that note, I'd like to share something with you too. I had a few consultations with a dietitian who does dietetics in conjunction with mental health. She says that "diet and exercise" has negative connotations, in that 'diet' is seen as something restrictive, instead of what goes into your mouth. 'Exercise' is viewed as running on treadmills, going to the gym etc and quite a chore. She likes to think of 'good nutrition' and 'movement'. It gets you away from 'diet' and 'exercise' and as long as you are putting good things in your body, there's no harm in eating chocolate regularly (or whatever your discretionary food of choice is). If you're moving and it's something you enjoy, you are more likely to keep it up and not see it as a chore. So I've been resolving to think in terms of 'what nutritious things have I eaten today?' rather than 'why did I succumb to chocolate today?!' and doing things like playing Wii Tennis with my son.

So if dancing is what you enjoy, you will keep doing it. Maybe we should do it with you!

This all makes a lot of sense.

I'd also like to share something else here, I hope MJ doesn't mind.

For the last 18 months, I have been battling depression and had to double the dosage of my meds as my usual dose wasn't working. Covid has messed wtih my head and one of the things I've been doing is comfort-eating. Add to this mobility issues with a sore foot and twisted ankle, well, I felt myself sliding downhill. Luckily with my mobility getting better, I've been feeling more motivated to start moving again. Today as I went for my customary 20-minute walk after lunch, listening to a podcast where an Australian TV personality was very frank about the mental health issues he has faced and pondering the deaths that have affected my life recently, I realised that today was a good day because I had the ability to experience good things. I also have the ability to experience future good things and that gives me something to look forward to and work towards. I need to hang onto these little things to help me get through the overwhelming stuff.

I'll get off my platform now and give MJ's thread back to her. :D
