MJ's little flock

i was talking to someone yesterday and it turned out her own dog got among her own hens and shook them. She stitched up the hens with thread from the sewing box.

I was having a very strong response on the inside but I kept my manners.

When I asked do you not have a vet, I got the "they're only chickens" answer.

Then I had an even stronger response and was going to lose my shit, so I said my chickens go to the vet regularly.

I didn't say: Because their health and wellbeing is my responsibility and I haven't studied veterinary science at uni, much less the avian specialisation, so I don't consider myself a chicken doctor.

And then the topic changed. I'm still a little rattled by it.

Before making an opinion, you need to know she's wealthier than I am, though not by a lot. Anyway the chooks ought to have had dog proof housing from the start.

I've stitched a couple of hens in the past but not with ordinary sewing thread and after the application of a pre stitching spray I got from gloria my vet in Catalonia.
There are not many vets that will stitch a chicken and sometimes, particulalry when it's a skin tear rather than a muscle tear, stitching is necessary, or it's cut away the skin and hope the patch fills in and infection doesn't.
I don't know the women in question but you may be doing her a small injustice. At least she tried and if the hen lived, may well have done the right thing.

I hate the *it's only a chicken* response. It's a sentient being capable of feeling & expressing pain & emotion. That alone entitles it to the best of care. :rant

That's what got me rattled! And there are a few avian specialists in Adelaide who'd stitch if necessary.

If she hadn't said it's only a chicken. I wouldn't have been so tetchy.

That's well said. :thumbsup
