I think it's the right choice. Introducing four to four would have been a lot, and it would be so sad not to be able to have Ivy hatch because you have too many.

Three is ideal for my situation. If one perishes for some reason, the other two will have each other.

I didn't ask for a specific date, but I'll call again in a fortnight to see what's going on.

Oooh - Irises are my favorite. I have lots of the wild version that are native here - in spring I must remember to post a picture of them.
They are a deeper purple and less showy. I have some of the cultivated so-called bearded ones too. Whenever I see a space I try and put irises in it!

In other news, a finch has moved into the funrun and won't move out.

It must've hopped in yesterday while the door was ajar for Blossom to make her way out again.

Now it's spent the night in the run and discovered what a lovely home it is, with abundant food and water, it just won't be shooed out again. If it calls for friends I'll have an uphill battle on my hands.


Update: I needed a branch in each hand to get that little finch out. My arms were extended so much, even the chickens were horrified. I said, well it is Hallowe'en my little friends! Mwahahahaha!

Anyway, the finch is gone and now it will have a scary story to tell its children.

I've just called up to find out about the pullets and the choices were four or two or wait a couple more weeks.

Four is too many. What if Ivy does a hatch in summer?

Two is too few. More chances of injury from the big four hens and only one friend to grow with while in quarantine.

So I decided to wait a few more weeks, even though it hurt.

Is hard to be smart about adding to the tribe. I bow to your superior discipline.

I have always added one more than I planned upon. This time around it actually was Glynda. While clearly that was a good decision, she was not in "the plan". Imagine now if Lady Featherington was the only new chicken.

The time before it was Sansa. I'm not saying it hasn't worked out but neither were part of "the plan".

I was actually a little sad because I thought the new chickens meant that Ivy would not be able to hatch. I'm glad to hear you are planning for that eventuality as well.

I never expected it to flower. Many years ago, I was told irises need a lot of water and sun: that one has had very little to drink and it's in shade most of the time. The friend who works on the garden for me brought if from another garden she works on.

Have you been keeping your garden for many years RC?

It was the obvious thing to try. That finch knew all the hiding spaces!
