I’ve got mites! And I can’t do anything about it for a couple of days. When I can I will pull everything out, spray everything and then rinse it all out and let dry. Plus Nyssa is covered in pin feathers, no wonder she’s uncomfortable! At least new feathers are growing in.

I often wonder about mites but haven't seen any symptoms. How can I tell if mites are a problem? Did you see them on the hens?

I had a quick look at Nyssa’s neck last night and I couldn’t see any. The only reason I know is I grabbed a dish to put extra food in and they were in the dish. The instructions on the spray says you have to rinse it off, so I’ll have to pull everything out, spray everything, hose it out, let it dry and then put stuff back.

The hens are camped out on the deep shade, with the garden hose trickling to make a cool wet patch. There's iced water and plenty of food under the shade.

At 41C, Mary made her way out of the shade, through the bright, hot sunshine, to the nest to lay her egg. She could've laid in the nearby, shady bush.

Anyway, I've put a bowl of iced water immediately outside the nest, frozen Esky blocks on either side of the nest, and the cordless fan is blowing on her.

I may have to bring her inside after to cool down.
