MJ's little flock

I opened two of Katie's eggs for breakfast and both had blood spots. One of them had large, protruding blood spots.

I've not seen blood spots that protrude so much.

Should I be worried?

I believe blood spots are nothing to worry about if it’s only temporary. One reason is possibly large eggs in young laying hens why a blood vessel is torn.
Maybe someone else can tell you more. :idunno
Thank you. She's an older hen but it is early in her season, so maybe that's why.

Last night there was a missing hen at lock up time. You can imagine the panic and the fear that slowly curdled into horror.

After 10 minutes of searching, I found her and carried her into the roost.

It was Sarah the young white Brahma and she had sat down between the spare coop and the woodshed. Which is rather out in the open! She'd have been fox dinner by morning for sure.

She had to tolerate several kisses as I carried her in.
Oh they do try us so at times. So glad you found her.

In other news, I'll be picking up 4 chicks on January 3. I've requested a cream legbar, a welsummer, an easter egger, and a bantam orpington because 4 is the minimum order and these are the breeds they can most reliably sex. I'm hopeful of not having the responsibility of rehoming a cockerel next year. This breeder vaccinates for Marek's. I'll keep them in an indoor brooder until they're old enough for their vaccinations to have become fully systemic. I'm tempted to go full on "crazy chook lady" and set up the brooder in the kitchen for hours of delightful chick watching. But I suppose that wouldn't be hygienic 🙄 I'm going to try puppy training pads in the brooder this time around.
I keep them in my office with me. Work is so enjoyable with them as company. I highly reccomend it. 😁

This is very exciting news! :wee :wee

They occur because a blood vessel leaked during egg production. It can happen more frequently in older hens but is generally considered nothing to be concerned about.
