Mods- please move to "Geese"?- Growing Goslings!

well, I called my local Global Agway and he said he'll check on it. He orders from Ideal and the 1st shipment is Mid April, so I don't see why they couldn't ship 6 Pilgrim goslings with all the ducklings and chicks he orders. Could they sex them first? I"d only want 2 males at the most with up to 4 females.

I your geese are going to be all the same breed I would only get one male. One male will breed 3-4 females. Otherwise their may be fighting and over breeding of the females. Ideal does sex there geese. I have ordered from them before.

You may already have this, but here's Ideal website on geese for sale. It tells you whats available.

Julie, thanks. I went to Ideal's website and have a shopping cart filled with 1 pair and 3 females (Pilgrims.) I have to wait until Agway calls me back and some of the people I've called or left messages for get back to me, but this may be the easiest way to get just what I want. Metzers' Farm is way out in CA, and I'm not familiar with any hatcheries near NJ who sell geese. I'll look more into that so they'd have the shortest traveling time...

I used to live in Western NY. I ordered a bunch of ducks from Ideal about this time of the year. They came healthy and in great shape. I also had great service. The travel time didn't seem to bother them a bit. I have also ordered from Metzer in the past(when I lived in NY) I only had one order with a few dead ducks, but the top of the box was crushed, so that may have not been from them. They also had great service and made it right by me.

I don't think the travel time will harm them, they have very healthy stock at Ideal.

But I don't blame you for wanting to look closer, I wish I had somewhere closer to me. I would love to be able to just go pick them up.

Thanks Julie! I'm an ex Western NY'er myself. Grew up in Jamestown/Busti. I may just go ahead and order from Ideal. Even Metzer's babies arrive in 2 days from CA. So any of them should be fine...Ideal has them available in 2 1/2 weeks too.

I just had an idea to maybe order the goslings from Ideal and also order my 5 little Black Langshan pullets from them too, as Welp has run out of them and had to cancel my order (even though I've had them on order for months now...) but Ideal is out too until April or May. Agh! I think Ideal has the best ordering options on the Pilgrims...I can order a pair and just females. No one else seems to have that and not all of them even have Pilgrims.
Any last advice before I do it? Some friends thought I was nuts when I told them...they said all geese are nasty. I said not all and that many people just don't understand them. I'm reading up on goose body language, so we can be ready.

Two of one sex can supposedly work, but why don't you want a male? Raised from babies and not mistreated most breeds are fine with people.
They get hissy in their breeding season, and I'd bet even two females will do that to protect their eggs. I think your on the right track researching the body language. It has worked for me.

I do want a male...just 1 though. I want a male and 3-4 females. But most places have just St. Run...that's too iffy for me. Wonder why with them esp b/c they can be sexed by color....

I did it! Finally I got their site to work! I ordered once and didn't get anywhere...so went back after contacting them and re-did it. I got to step 4 of 4 and have an order # now. Whew! Oh now I can't wait for March 18th or 20th. Whatever. Its a few weeks away now! honk honk! 1 little boy and 4 little girl geese will be on their way!

Once again we convinced someone to buy geese lol

I'm glad, you'll have to keep us posted and pics are in demand.

You went with the Pilgrim breed right? They will be perfect for you. Did you order your black Langshan pullets too?

I grew up around Arcade NY. that is about 2 hours south east of Buffalo. we were almost neighbors.
