More sick birds. *Necropsy Report!* (Now with IC, swollen eye...)

We do have Brown Recluse in Kentucky. I doubt it could be from a roo as she was very small when we picked her up and she was in the pen with all the other chicks (there was only one mature bird, a broody silkie hatching some quail, in the same pen).

I hope she's ok...how is the ameraucana doing today?

I do know that with IB they can get lesions under their wings. That was one of the questions the state vet asked me, was if they had any sores or lesions under their wings. IB can be spread by wild birds, and if the disease progresses far enough, it will damage the chickens kidney's and they can die. So this may very well be a case of IB.

Yuck!! I need to make sure I know what they look like. My birds love to hang out underneath of the coop (it's raised) and I bet there are plenty of spiders under there.

The white ameraucana isn't eating or drinking. I saw it give one peck at the water earlier, but when I threw in some corn it looked but acted like it was too sore or too much effort to bend its neck down. I also noticed it thinking about preening, spreading the tail feathers apart then slowly leaning behind itself but stopping...over and over for a few minutes, never able to reach all the way back. It doesn't have a runny nose or any symptoms other than being lethargic and not eating/drinking.

I had IB go through my flock, and I had no symptoms at all other than the wrinkled eggs.

ILT usually kills faster than every two weeks, and more birds would be affected than just one at a time. That doesn't mean that's not what it is, just my personal experience You can disinfect the run with Oxine (mix with water and put in a spray bottle, sorry, can't remember the proportions) but you can spray the run, mist the birds, and put a few drops in the drinking water to disinfect it. You can also get lime and rototil it into the soil, of course, you have to take the chickens out first and make sure the lime is entirely buried before you let them back in. I have not tried this, too scared to, but I know they do it in commercial operations and it works well for killing whatever virus or germ is in the soil.

no IB cannot kill but a secondary infection with it can.

if u r useing tylan 50 the dos should be 1 full cc for an adult bird NOT 1/4cc and 1/2 for youngsters. it should be given for 5-7 days but if not sick enough sometimes 3 days is all needed. the shot should be given in the chest also where it it has the most meat on it. ur not giveing enough tylan is why it is not working and not giveing it in the right place is probably not helping either. another thing if it is a virus like ilt or ib a antibiotic will not help that only the secondary infection till they can build immunities with antibodies.

u can use 10% bleach water to clean with.

do they have bubbles in the eyes or white or yellow plaque looking stuff in the mouths on the roof, around tounge, or sides of back of throats? is it affecting only 1 eye or both? r the sinuses in the front really swollen above the beak? has egg laying dropped at all? do any sound like they have rails or raspy sounds or sneezeing? check bedding for amonia smell or molds. is the sand u r useing in the runs only or the coops too? if it has tiny particals enough to inhale like dust then that very well could be the prob right there affecting all of them.

My bantam BLRW pullet is at the diagnostic lab getting a necropsy right now. (She was the one with the gross black thing under the wing.) This morning she was in the coop collapsed, the other birds had trampled her. She died right as we were leaving for the diagnostic lab. I'm so sad. But the good news is, my other birds all seem fine. I called the person recommended by the state vet's office and he told me that it sounds like they have IB and to give them Sulmet in the water for seven days, so I started Sulmet yesterday and today they already seem better. I hope it lasts. I lost five chickens in two months to the mystery snot takeover, I can't stand to lose any more. It's so depressing to think about.

The diagnostic lab told me they will call me within 24 hours to let me know what they found, and then the results of the diagnostic testing will be back in 7-10 days. I can't wait for them to call! I'm a little nervous.

On a side note, even tho I had seen the picture of the black thing under the wing, it was still a shock seeing it again - lunch did a flip flop in my tummy.
