The past 2 mornings, one of my chickens is making a very loud, high pitched BAWK sound. It's loud enough to wake me up. So I thought I'd have an egg, but I go up there and no egg. They were still locked up and I've searched the whole coop, and nada.

What's going on?

I do have a RIR that started charging my dog at the fence. But the RIR has always been the last in pecking order, so I never thought it could be a rooster. I'll go get a pic and maybe you guys can tell me.

Well, I don't think my RIR is a rooster. I took some pics and I'll get them up in a bit.

I confirmed the sound is the same noise my red sex link makes after she lays an egg. But why would they be making the noise without laying an egg?

Here she is

Why I can't tell you, but mine were singing the egg song a lot before they started laying, and even the rooster joins in. Mine just started laying and they sing before they lay and sometimes during, and again after. Oh, and when one does it many times they all follow .... yes the singing is loud...

i dont know about egg songs, but my rir roos were pretty obvios at 5wks, they had wattles and red combs. and now at 9-10 wks they crow and have the tail feathers and everything, you can Tell they are roos. they dont look like yours at all

nope she's a SHE!

She may be getting ready to lay, or she may be assuming the roll of the roo if you do not have a roo. Either way, at 2o weeks she will be laying soon and the yelling will continue... enjoy, she's a nice looking little RIR
