Most humane way to put a chick down?

I'm with the two guys above, if you can't humanely put a bird down, maybe keeping animals isn't for you. Ether? Suffocating them with car exhaust! Freezing? Drowning, suffocation? .....very cruel and inhumane.

One quick chop and it's done. I can't believe somebody would recommend using car exhaust, good way to end up dead.

I think we shouldn't judge one another. Each person putting a bird down is trying to do the right thing. There are precautions with any method you use. A slip of an axe can do damage as well.

And, you should get to know folks before making such as broad statement as something like maybe keeping animals isn't for you.

Well if we can all understand that it is in a womans psychological makeup to kill via suffocation and similar..poision...
And a man will shoot or cut you to pieces.
Look it up.
I was raised with my dad and three brothers but I still count..:p
The first time hunting that I shot something, I wanted to cry. Ihad to do this circle of life, I'm going to eat it, thank you dear animal thing in my head. Don't dare kill a frog around me unless your going to eat it.
The reason its so hard to kill a chicken (in our heads) is that they have long stretchy necks and flap around. And you have to typically chop the head. (Or use a .22) but my guns are too high caliber.
So, wood chopping block and ax. Stretch the neck and grab the head and don't hit your hand. Try it you'll so much appreciate life after taking one. Even for good cause.
I've had to hit a raccoon on the head with a shovel too.
What happens when you are in front of a preditor with too high a caliber gun/ rifle and you have to save your flock? You'll grab a shovel. Do you really want a raccoon pouncing on you? No you'll hit it as hard as you can. Maybe more than once. Id like everyone arguing the not to behead method to please answer that question because its a god one.

well, i dont know about that man, woman thing. i am a woman and i much rather chop the head off. but !!! i have missed, a couple times. it doesnt bother me ( the blood). it does hurt to know that there may be a better way.the hatchet is all i have ever used. and as far as your fingers, heres a little tip. put 2 nails or long screws in a V shape on your chopping block. you can stretch the head and neck out then and have one hand free for the hatchet. heres another, hold the chicken on its back like you would a baby, it will relax and i have a tall table so after it is calm and/or asleep, i slid him to the table and then work fast. i have always worked this way as my forefathers. why? because its fast. if you have 20 birds to process you dont have time to fill baggies with ether. dont mean its not a better way. if i had a choice, would i want to have my head cut off so i wouldnt feel the pain or drugs to put me to sleep?hmmm..... i really dont think one way is any better than another if they work well.

With all due respect, I'll choose to stay far away from anyone who puts an animal in a bag, ties it to a cars exhaust pipe and starts the car.

If you wish to misquote me that is fine, I guess the part where I say "if you cannot put an animal down humanely" was intentionally left out, just so the quote would sound condescending?

you can always do it like my grandmother said... "just stretch its neck". though usually she was leveling the threat towards me and my brothers. i'll use the neck stretch sometimes. if you pull quick and hard it'll pop the head right off. to me it's the same as the axe chop but without the danger of losing a finger.

i do enjoy the general reactions by some to the methods used by others. NAZIS!!!! hahahahhahaha

Mis quote? Your whole post was there in mine. What you think is humane may or may not be to another and vice versa. The exhaust method was from a bird conservation association. Humane Societies use gas because it is one of many humane ways to end the suffering.

i would think that CO would be a fine way to dispatch a bird. BUT, i don't know if i would eat it after that. I think i read several years ago how CO permanently bonds to muscle in your body. that's how a coroner can tell CO poising in people... red/pink skin. though it might be perfectly fine. not an expert in that area.

aww, lets play nice. agree to disagree. then we can all go outside and vent our frustrations by chopping the gas/ether/ect.... with our hatchets and see which one wins..... bet it wont be us...
