Mountain Peeps's Chat Thread...Continued!

Anyone have any idea what's wrong with my hen? I noticed bloody scabs on her comb, wattles and ear lobes this morning. I'm thinking it's possibly Avian pox, but not sure. All my other chickens look fine. Any help is appreciated.

That looks like fowl pox.
My chicken, Lady Marigold, has it too. :/

My guess would be pox, I'm dealing with that at the moment too. Pretty much you just have to let it do its own thing, try to keep their immune systems strong, give them vitamins and such, so they don't get secondary infections but that about all you can do. If it turns into wet pox you have to pull the growths in their mouths out, it's hard but doable.

She might be getting picked on.

She's normally at the top of the pecking order so that would be kind of odd. But possible. She's been acting distant lately and won't eat treats out of my hand like she used too.

Thank you both, I had thought the same thing. But is it normal for the scabs to be red like blood? Everything I've read on it describes black, white or yellowish scabs. Should I seperate her to stop it from spreading? I'm sorry you guys are also dealing with this :/

My chicken usually gets fresh red scabs, then they turn black as they 'dry out'. I don't know if it's the same with anyone else.
As far as separating goes, you probably should (especially if you have a large flock). I didn't with my hen, because I only have two chickens and they're easy enough to treat together. :p
