The white in his mouth doesn’t seem any better and still mucus. The smell however is not as bad.

I posted a photo of his ear as I’m not sure if they are a bit swollen and crusty.

I have ordered liquid coconut oil which I think is used for cooking and also coconut oil that comes in a jar as I didn’t know which one I was supposed to use. They will arrive tomorrow. The canker medicine arrived today but will try with the coconut oil first tomorrow.

He seems to be feeling ok in himself as he had his breakfast fine and then went to chase after his girls.

I tried to remove the white lesions seen in the above photo but could not.

Azygous, I have just read your wonderful article on sour crop and impacted crop. Thank you for taking the time for the benefit of others like me.

I see you use the coconut oil that is not liquid and the dosage you recommend.

I also see you recommend miconazole for yeast treatment. I have been using an anti-fungal cream that contains clotrimazole. Have I been using the wrong one or are they similar in their healing properties?

I will start with the coconut oil tomorrow morning. I hope the photos taken this morning have been helpful.

I gave my rooster coconut oil this morning and will give some more tonight. His mouth is looking worse though so I’ve come to the conclusion that the thrush cream has done nothing.

Would it be advisable to give antibiotics tomorrow if no improvement with the coconut oil.

I have posted photos of my rooster’s mouth but not sure if anyone has seen them yet.

I used a fungal and canker medicine for pigeons which was all I could get at the time and also used gentian violet and veterycin spray. The lesions in his mouth grew so much they bulged his cheek out before he died.

5 years old and has been up till now in great health. His lesions are not yellow but white and don’t seem as bad as my first rooster. His breath smells bad. He is still crowing and eating and his crop is emptying but the mucus in his mouth is getting him down. Is it just coincidence that this is similar to what my first rooster had and if so does this mean it is canker?

I have ordered metronidazole for pigeons in case it is canker but it has not arrived yet so in the meantime I have started treatment for thrush. I have been giving him over the counter thrush cream orally twice a day
Did you get the Metronidazole yet?
I would probably start that if you have it.

Your rooster also looks like he has an ear infection.
Ear infection can be from respiratory illness, bacterial, fungal or viral infections and sometimes ear mites. Check him all over well for any parasites. Getting some testing to determine what the cause is would be a good idea.

You can try dropping a few drops of Hydrogen Peroxide in the ears to boil up the pus, gently remove as much as you can with a qtip and pack the ear with triple antibiotic ointment. An infection like that, the pus needs to be removed in order to start healing, so you may need to clean the ears out daily.
I would also check the rest of your flock over for lice/mites.

Since he has ear infection, the oral lesions could be from respiratory illness, but it would be hard to know - can you get a vet to test some swabs?
He may need additional antibiotic treatment. I'm not sure what combo can be used with Metronidazole, but I believe you can use Tylan50 in conjunction. @casportpony or @Eggcessive would know more about that.

Thank you so much for your help in regards to my rooster’s ears. I thought they didn’t look right. I have antibiotic cream so will use that but will have to get some hydrogen peroxide.

I now have metronidazole and Baytril so will start with that combo if that is advisable. I would love to take him to the vet, but we are farmers and my husband doesn’t think chickens are worth vet’s money though to me my chickens are my pets. I will try to change his mind as I am finding it very stressful seeing my rooster like this and not knowing what to do for him. His breathing doesn’t sound too good today.

Do you think it is likely to be canker from the photos?

I have 21 chickens and 8 ducks and no one else is affected at all.

Thanks again for replying.

Thank you.

I have to order the coconut oil unfortunately and it won’t be here till Tuesday morning. It is night time here now and he is in bed so I will get a photo in the morning.

When I get the coconut oil, how do I administer it?
They sell coconut oil unrefined in the grocery stores. Go to the organic isle even Walmart carries it. We have coconut oil here in my itty bitty town. Go look and see. Best wishes
