Thanks!

Received our order from MM today - shipping was prompt, box arrived in good shape. We ordered 25, received 26 - declined the free chick but did receive an extra white leghorn, not uncommon with hatchery orders. 12 hours in we are at 23 and I expect to be at 22 by morning. The losses have all been in the speckled sussex group - they were noticeably smaller than all of the other chicks (ordered a total of 5 breeds) and seemed the most compromised on arrival. I've sent a message to see if they have received similar feedback from others who received SS out of this hatch, waiting to see what that yields.

That being said - other than the SS issues I am quite pleased with MM and the birds. The other chicks are all bright eyed and bushy tailed, arrived in good shape and have settled right in in the brooder....which is why I keep going back to there being an issue with this hatch of SS as a whole vs. it being a MM issue specifically. Of course it would be the SS, the breed that was the whole reason I placed this order (can get the other breeds locally, but no one has the SS).

@Ol Grey Mare , sorry about your SS. Hope you find SS breeders. I've been looking for local English Orpington breeders myself for a while, but I do want to enjoy raising baby chicks again, so I resorted to the hatchery in the hopes I don't get any roosters

I am a little nervous about receiving day-olds in the mail. It's going to be the first time for me.

I am going to order SS's in a few months from McM along with EE's, Buff Orpingtons, New Hampshires, and Blue Andalusians. I will let you guys know how they are when I get them; sometime in May most likely...

I meant SS to be Speckled Sussex. They are very nice! I have had Salmon Favorelles and really like them, but they were at the bottom of the pecking order here. I think it can be harder to integrate them in a mixed flock, even without real bullies like some other breeds. The feathered feet looked tired sometimes, but didn't cause health issues. Mary
