Muscovies: what color and pattern are these?

Quote:
Probably the self blue or pastel gene. Silver is quite obvious (blue x blue).
I've heard quite a few first hand stories about the infighting that has gone on among
prominent waterfowl breeders but opening that can of worms will get this thread jerked
so I won't go there.

Yes Brian Paul Witt is quite the South Carolina character and produces fantastic Muscovies. I have been trying for years to get him to put his knowledge on paper because he does write fairly well (more easy to follow than his spoken communications) I hate to think of all his know how going to his grave with him! He claims not to have the time now, maybe when age slows him down he will write THE muscovy book.
Holderread is/was the standard domestic waterfowl AUTHOR as he organizes knowledge in a way that is fairly easy to understand but it is a wide field and no one can be the expert in all the little corners, and he hasn't shown a lot of interest in Moscovies or Call ducks (I have a theory why but will not repeat it publically) The Ashtons might have replaced Holderread if they had been in the USA so their books were more available.
As for Muscovies years ago I have a few old magazines (Ducks and Geese) from the 50s and 60s and we raised them on our farm during that period. There was still a good market for Ducks and Geese for meat production back then. Many of the colored muscovies were known then but the interest was all on the Whites for meat production just as the Pekin became the standard table duck. Today you can by a "Long Island style Frozen duckling" in most supermarkets, don't bother look for a Goose or a Muscovy as they have fallen out of favor.

Yup Brain Paul is about as scarce as hens teeth these days.
Its been a long time since I've talked to him.
I should give him a call now that I'm thinking about it.
His full time job and kids sports keeps him off the radar screen.
He's even cut back on his Muscovies and seems to have more of an interest in game
chickens these days. GD does BP ever post of The Poultry Connection?
I don't go there anymore so don't know whats going on over there.

LOL Very well said. He is a prime example of what Foxworthy refers to when he states that you really just don't want to hear your surgeon speaking with a southern accent. However, very intelligent man and can write like no other.

Well said. I tried to attempt something like that but it just sounded snarky so for my good deed of the day I erased it.

Perhaps we should all Email BP and tell him that he needs to get started on that book - one chapter at a time!! He could use the downtime, I am sure!!

YES I did see a post there either today or yesterday. I think It was the first since the big fall shows. The traffic is really down over there since they went to the newer board.

Well a copyright woud do just that. Brian Paul mentioned that once and the other thing is that he doesn't want to help the compition to catch up with him. I sort of walk a tight rope, I helped BP develope his feeding program and I have great respect for both him, and Holderread's work, I never bring up the subject....

Dear Fr. John,
I don't think what you posted was either frowned upon or misunderstood.
Everybody has an opinion. Thats just the way it goes on forums.
I hope we can keep this topic going.
Believe me its always interesting when anybody brings up Muscovie genetics.
As for DH, the mere mention of his name always stirs up controversy.
Its hard to avoid and actually the comments here have been quite civil
compared to what typically happens.
I hope we can focus on Muscovy genetics.
Fr. John, PLEASE continue to share anything your learn with us!

Yes, please keep the thread going! I would love to learn more about Muscovy colors. I really, really would love to add a couple to my flock, not to breed, but just to enjoy them and maybe have them as broodies. They definitely come in some beautiful colors. I thought everyone on the thread was getting along just fine. I am not sure because it is hard to read tone, but I didn't detect anything negative and none of my posts were meant to sound negative (if they did).
