I know this is a picture thread, but I have a question regarding drake sizes vs. hens. Bob is like two times the size of our new hens. We have them in separate pens and I am afraid to put them in together. I just can't imagine him on top of one. Should I put Bob on a diet or is this very common? Do Muscovy drakes breed as aggressively as other duck breeds?

drakes are usually at least twice the size of hens, yes they are aggressive breeders but I don't think nearly as bad a as regular duck. Yes it looks awful when they breed sometimes I swear the drake will drown the hen but it all works out. I have a gander who insists on breeding my muscovey hens (when I'm not lookin' or to far away to push him off) but the hens live thru it.

I know I've read that but seeing the size difference...WOW. I've had the drake going on two weeks now and the hens just one week. Do you think it's ok to put them in together now? Or with the other ducks??

Have you clipped wings yet? You could try it and see how it goes while your keeping watch. There will be some pecking order but it's not a rough as chickens.

I have my two drakes and seven hens in a pen with four geese and a Khaki Campbell pair. They all get along just fine.
I could never put my Muscovy's in a pen with my geese my geese are like mobsters this time of year.

The drake is clipped. I was going to leave the females so they could fly away from the drake if needed. We have a lot of land so it's not a problem if they fly around. They are in separate pens now. Eventually I will let them free range. Should I clip the females??

Speaking of rough chickens, OMG. Just had our first injury this week and it is horrendous. I'm guessing a young rooster started it and when the others saw blood, they just pounced on her. Poor girl. I feel so sad for her. Keeping her in the house at night and day pen. She's eating and moving around real well but just looks awful. I'm giving her tetracycline in the water and topical antibiotics. She's got a long way to go
