I always quarantine new poultry. Lice, mites, pox, enteritis... the list of possible problems is a long one if you aren't one hundred percent sure of the care they received before you got them. It's better to be safe than have to deal with an outbreak. While in quarantine my birds get treated for internal and external parasites and get a round of antibiotics, Just In Case. Muscovy can be asymptomatic carriers of salmonella, and you won't know till you have babies dying of it.What do you quarantine them for? All I ever do with new ones is worm them. (Not like chickens, of course, the numbers of diseases they can bring!)
Do you have a large area for them? I´ve only ever bought 4 adults, and they never did try to fly away. It´s safe here, no dangers at all if they stay in the chácara (homestead), they have two acres that they share with chickens, geese, they have food, water, bushes, grass and mud, so they´re happy. And I´ve only bought them from a good distance away so they have no idea where they´d want to go anyway!![]()
what should i do guys I'm literally freaking out, because infections lower the immune system and like.....
I clipped them the same way I have done my chickens in the past doing the primary feathers on one wing. Think I am going to have to do another wing cause it doesn't seem to phase them at all, they are still flying all over the place. They couldn´t get up there with clipped wings! How did you clip them?
That's what I did, I clipped on wing and did the primary feathers but I guess maybe I need to do the secondary feathers too. or maybe both wings. They are only 13 weeks so hopefully they will get to fat to fly soon lol. The girls are the biggest culprits and are still flying everywhere even with their wings clipped. Not sure what else to do. At least they have 2 acres to fly in so if they do get out they will be okay and I am usually here to capture them and put them back in the fenced yard if they do get loose.Must not have clipped them enough. I only clip one wing on each of my Scovy's it makes them off balance so they can't fly. I'd love to let mine be able to fly all they want but we live right smack in the middle of the woods if they fly they will eventually end up in the river with no way to get home. except walk and that would be deadly for them.
Ah, I couldn't tell from the lighting, but that is a Gorgeous color. I love how even it is.
well thanks guys for answering :/
Some of us have answered...so, is it not a tick? I see she also has a little mark right near her eye. Is it the same thing?well thanks guys for answering :/
The males will fly, but not for long. Females continue to fly, and if you clip one wing it throws them off balance, and they find it difficult to fly. However, I had a female that with just one wing clipped managed to scale up and over a 5' fence while flapping. Nothing kept her in. Now I don´t clip their wings anymore. That's what I did, I clipped on wing and did the primary feathers but I guess maybe I need to do the secondary feathers too. or maybe both wings.
