MUTINY!! My wife and son jump ship!!

Oh - my husband's okay with the chickens (likes the eggs) but HE's the one who really wants ducks! I told him, in the spring, after we prepare the yard with a pond for them. THEN we'll get some ducklings so he can bond with them. We tried getting some ducks this fall, and they were SOOOO messy. Not in MY coop ever again.

I'm really looking forward to getting my 3 chicks this weekend!

Just look at my signature my husband says we've accumulated to many chickens. But I have ways of convincing him to let me have more! And I've got 14 more BLRW eggs from Bishop's in the bator.... and Dh paid for them! You know someone wise once said 'its better to ask for forgiveness then to ask for permission' I don't actually do that to much but its a great 'proverb'

Well after the nightmare that was cleaning my garage after having 24 chickens in it for 9 weeks (long story; they should have never been in there that long), it can be said that my family had every right to tell me where to get off when I suggested doing them again this year.

Hence my thread on raising them outside next year XD

My mom tolerates them cause she knows I love 'em! She doesn't want more chicks because the first and only batch of chicks was not sexed like the person told us they were.

Last year my husband and I really went bonkers on expanding our flock. I bought 20 from a hatchery, and thought I'd be content with that.
Ah well I found an Ameraucana breeder nearby and...couldn't pass up those green/blue eggs right? At $5 each, I could afford 20 at the time. So 20 more...

And then our barred rocks started laying and I noticed beautiful speckled eggs and doing research online, fell more in love with the breed. Someone nearby posted an ad for BR chicks and if you bought 50+ they were only $1 each. So I bought 50.

Then my friend hatched out some eggs for me and 3 marans came to live with us.

And then someone 20 minutes from here had buff orpingtons! I bought another 20....

This was very early spring, and my original brooder set up was a heat lamp and a rubbermaid bin.

We already used our spare room as a ''maternity ward'' for winter litters from our rabbits.

Then I bought more heat lamps.

Because I had to buy more bins.

And I was in that room claning EVERY DAY and I kicked them out as soon as they were 3-4 weeks old and I was confident they wouldn't die in a brooder out in the barn.

I really dont recommend raising 100 chicks in the house. It took me too logn ot realize where all the dust was coming from. I live in a super old house and I just figured dust happens.
Fun experience though.

So, JAK, doing the chicken math tells me you are as addicted as the rest of us crazy chicken folks. How many does that make for you? I was up to about 160 this summer before I started to butcher and sell off undesirables. Now I have a mere 65. I am already thinking about what to order or hatch in the spring.

I'm planning on raising chicks in my laundry room w/ a heat lamp-we've done it before and they've survived so I thought, "hey, why not?"... except the rest of my family doesn't agree with that plan... for NOW:D

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell, as it turns out (and nobody told me this) lots of chicks in a brooder make LOTS and LOTS of dust. I mean epic, biblical proportions LOTS.
And said dust travels VERY far and settles on and in, absolutely EVERYTHING, including vertical surfaces. (who knew?)

I keep the brooder in our big detatched garage. The same garage my husband keeps all his hobby model airplanes and remote control cars and boats. All those 'toys' have lots of small crevices and seals and mechanical do-hickies with lots of wires and serve-o's and junk that are apparently very attractive to floating chick dust, because thats where a large majority of it seems to settle. Hubby is NOT pleased. He keeps asking "When is chick raising season over?" in very impatient tone. He keeps threatening to move my brooder outdoors! (never gonna happen! ) It was pretty bad out there this year, you could write in the dust, even make little hills out of the dust for the occasional passing spider to ski down. It took alot of willpower for me to ignore all that dust, but I managed. Actually, it wasnt all that hard to ignore when I had soooo many new chicks to care for and play with!

It took him forever to clean up all the dust and blow out the garage. When he was finished, he told me no more chicks till spring, period. I told him he should invest in dust covers for his toys- he said I should look into breeding 'dustless chickens'. I very quietly agreed no more chicks, but then I 'happened' into some amazing eggs (Icelandics) that I couldnt turn down. I think I might have him convinced that 4 chicks wont make hardly any dust at all. (hee hee hee!)

Thats pretty much the worst part of raising our chickens- the dust. Hubbsters doesnt want me to raise more chicks just because of the dust. At least thats his only issue- never mind the cost of feed, or the chicken poo and feathers all over, nor the hours I spend with my chickens cleaning the coops and nesting boxes and just generally being near them, nevermind THAT, his only complaint is the dust!

That's exactly my boyrfriend! I "promised" we wouldn't raise chicks in the house after our layers were outside... well it must have been enough time for him to forget 'cuz now I have 16 more in the bathroom! LoL

Do quail also produce dust? I want to file that info away for the future.

30-some odd years ago, I raised quail and brooded them in the house. I can honestly say I derived great satisfaction from popping the lil' suckers heads off and frying them. And the smell, WHEW!! And I did clean them every day. I cheated and got 2 grown laying hens, but in the spring I will get some chicks. I don't know where they will call home yet, but it won't be in MY house. I work 10 hour days and my house already looks bad enough without pooping peepers in it.

I am sure my long suffering DH will be grateful.
