My alleged Australorps, with pics, I hope....

Chris, my buff orps have yellow legs... Their feathers are coming in a nice deep gold color.

The jersey giants have had dark legs from the beginning, and my welsummers look like welsummers. My gold laced wyandottes aren't as "lacey" as I hope they'll be, but, they still look OK based on what I've seen around the forum. If my "australorps" weren't so friendly I'd really be bummed!

Plan A was to have GLW's and JG's, but, then the doggies ate two of my Wyandottes, and only two of the JG's came in (the next day!). I was a bit of a wreck at that point and tried to put together a little black and shades of gold flock. Now it won't be quite as black as I thought if the "barred australorps" continue to hold their color. oh well

Another check for australorps is the bottom of their feet. True australorps have pinkish white bottoms rather than yellow. Legs are state coloured. Here is one of my pullets and roos at almost 4 week for comparison. ...you can see the little bit of white in the breast feathering that is now gone at 9 weeks. Their legs look lighter here due to the sun... The grey in the background is another chick...

Your Australorps are Barred Rocks and if your Orpingtons have Yellow legs then they are Buff Rocks. Buff Orpingtons will have White legs...

At this point I can't decide between kicking a fit and just loving my chickens anyway. I'll take a close look at the bottom of my striped baby's feet later today. What color eggs do Rocks lay?

Also, I think I'll go the local craigslist approach for any more chicks I purchase. I could have gotten nice blue and black giants for a bit more, plus a long drive. It would have been worth it!

They difinitely look like barred rocks. I got both barred rocks and austrolorps from McMurray. When they came I could not tell them apart until the barring started to show on the rocks feathers. Austrolorps do not have barring like that.

The hazards of the feed store - LOL - I would just love them anyway. I got a couple of black and yellowish chicks from the feed store - they turned into what I can only figure are monster sized black sex links - but out of all of the babies I got this spring from all of the different places - they are two of the most interesting girls I have. They had black legs so I thought for sure they were australorps or jersey giants - but their green sheened feathers and copper hackles at 12 weeks make me think they are sex links now - I have just decided not to care and keep them.

buff rocks are just as good a pet and egg layer as the buff orps are in my opinion, I have both and unless I look at their legs I cant tell them apart, of course egg color is slightly different too but they are both great layers, great pets and we love em all! (as well as our Black Austr.)

I have 2 barred rocks they lay large brown eggs they are very nice, I think you will love them I have 2 red star sex link, 2 black star sex links, 2 Australorps 2 buff orphintons, 2 barred rocks, 3 EE's bantams and 1 blue Ameriacuana, and a mixed bantam rooster so I have a mixed flock and they are all great in there own way.
