My Anconas got to be free and in the pond for the first time!

one night we had to go out in the canoe to round up the new kids.

but ever since, they've been great about putting themselves to bed!

So.....last night, after their third free day, I look out the window and all my ducks are over by the Anconas nighttime pen....I HURRY and put on my boots and RUN out the door and across my yard. Well, when they see me, they think, "Peas??" and then they start their adorable walk/waddle/run over to me.....I hurried and started trying to herd them gently....I get them over to their pen and they go AROUND the gate, so now they are BEHIND their gate....ugh! Called my kids out to come help me, and lo and behold! We got them in and they slept in their pen! Whew! Now, I bet tonight they will all be thinking, "Oh, HELL no, you aren't getting us in there again!"

So, now that they have been free.....the first night, I got them in their pen, the second night they would NOT come out of the pond, kept swimming to the other side, and then their third night I got them in. I guess it will be luck of the draw each night....I want them to just go to their bed each night when it starts getting dark. I guess it is just a work in progress until they "get it".

Hopefully my kids will be like toadbriars eventually. Fingers crossed!!!!!

WHAT A BUNCH OF LUCKY DUCKS!! Can you fence in the pond, so they can stay/sleep there at night? My ducks are jealous!! I always fake yawn & pat my mouth & say it's bedtime & look at my watch to get our ducks to head in for the night. Daffy & Affy are good about this!! The girlz are not as good.

They are perfectly safe even if I didn't fence the pond.......I just want them to lay their eggs in the house each day, plus, if I let them sit on a nest next year, their eggs will be safe....last spring I had FIVE nests eaten!
