My Baby Quail Arrived Today! :)

I've lost one more--and there's another that is acting like its not going to make it through the night. *sigh*

Is it normal to have this much mortality?

IMO its not good to just throw the feed down in with the shavings, seems like they might be eating some of the shavings along with the feed, I would put paper towels down over the bedding & use a lid off a jar to put the feed in. And make sure you are feeding them 30% game bird starter that has been ground up. I usually grind up the feed for the first 5-7 days.

I am using 22% chicken crumbles -- because it's what a friend of mine who is raising Pharoah Coturnix (same as mine) uses and has been successful -- plus, it's what I have on hand for my chickens.

I put down a paper towel and put their food on it--they don't seem to care whether it's on the towel or on the ground and have been actively scratching for food.

No other mortality and the one that I didn't think would make it seems to be doing fine--I couldn't tell it from any of the others this morning when I checked on them.

I've seen some people suggest a red light to avoid cannibalism. Do I need to get a red light bulb? And is it any special kind of bulb? Or just has a red filter on it?
