I ordered 50 Pharoah Coturnix from Cackle Hatchery.

They sent 52. One was dead on arrival (looked crushed). I have 51 peeping quail babies in their new (temporary) home. :)

*Sigh* I lost another one. It was being "attacked" by the others. They kept tugging at its leg. I looked at it and its leg didn't appear to have a problem (but I'm no expert). I put it back in and they were tugging at it again after a bit, so I pulled it out again. This time I noticed a little bloody spot on the leg. I figured there was nothing I could do, so I put it back and let nature take its course. When I checked on them a short time later, I found one had drowned in the water. Upon examining it, I noticed that it was the same one with the wound on its leg. I guess nature did take its course. My daughter was quite heartbroken over it.

Looks great Might consider putting marbles in water so birds can't get in and get wet.The old saying is a wet Quail is a dead one.Its not fool proof but its got some merit...cva34

I'll run up to Wal-Mart tonight and buy a bag of marbles. Good idea. :)

They're too small to reach a chicken feeder, so I've just dropped their feed into the bedding--and they went after it! :) Is it possible that they're already bigger? :hmm

Congrats on your new acquisition!

I just want to comment on the feeding. I think it would be best to just put the food on the ground for now. You don't want those little Coturnix quail trampling on each other. It's just an opinion though.

Good luck!

Just put down a few papet towels and drop food on them.after about 3/5 days they will be ready for feeder.Sometimes you can put lets say a 2/4 piece of wood in fronnt of feeder for elevation ...cva34

I've been dropping the food on their bedding. They go after it like mad. :)

One of the babies was dead this morning, looks like it was crushed by its siblings. Another was laying on its back and hardly moving. I thought it was dying, so when I took the other baby out to the compost, I set down the other one intending a quick and merciful ending--but it started perking up. So, I held it for a bit, and it started getting active and I put it back in with its siblings. It started eating and running around right away.

Deep sleep, perhaps?

Also, I caught a fly and disabled its wings and dropped it in with the quail--it was grabbed immediately by a chick and hauled off to a private corner to be devoured. Any issues with this?
