My chicks are here!

Lol...Needless to say we were hungry when we named him.

You are right about needing a coop in the near future. Chickens grow fast because in nature there is strong incentive on getting big fast in terms of survival. Tame chickens still have natural instinct so they grow at quick rates. I noticed too that if one gets hurt they will give it a hard time, so as to try to keep it from slowing the flock down or making it sick. I had to quarintine a EE pullet because she had a poked eye and the big guys kept pecking her into the ground. After one day in isolation she was back and better then ever.

Isn't it crazy how much there is to learn from chickens and how much you learn just by keeping them. This is a experience I wouldn't trade for any other.

Yes I agree!

What adorable little fuzzy butts! You're going to have quite a beautiful flock, Jen4!!

To give them something to do, you could always put a roost or 2 in the box for them. It's pretty funny to watch them jump up and down on them and act like big chickies! I like to use 2 pieces of 2X4, with another piece (2" side up) across the top at a 45 degree angle (glued together, of course). That way it's stable and not too high for their delicate little legs.

I just give my chicks water and medicated chick starter and have it available 24/7 for them. I check their feed and change their water daily. My chicks are on wire so I don't have any problems with stuff getting in the feed and water and the chicks stay clean as the poop goes through the wire into poop catch trays. There are pictures on my BYC Page.

Thank you... I added some sticks for roost and they like them, it is cute to watch them jump up and sit there for a min.

Most flock birds will not show illness until they are extremely sick. That is why you usually end up losing a chicken that is visibly ill.

In nature, predators will single out a bird that is slower or sicker than his fellows, so it's an instinctual survival mechanism for birds to disguise their illness as long as they are physically able to.

I used to raise parrots and they are also HORRIBLE for hidng illness.

You might want to put marbles in the waterer to prevent accidental drowning. I do for about the first week or until I feel that they'd have to deliberatly want to commit suicide
