My dear sweet Sugar passed away today please help me.

I'm so very sorry.:( :( :(

The freezer idea is good if you have a big chest or upright additional freezer. If the ground is frozen you can keep sugar outside until the thaw. If your keeping her outside maybe put her in a bin or a tin garbage can(we use these to store feed and seeds). I agree with you on burying her vs throwing her away. We bury all our pets in the backyard right down to the hamsters. My husband and I will have a little funeral for our pets, it's easier on the kids and to say goodbye. We find a big rock and place it over the animal. Although every time I see the rocks I do get a bit sad, especially my cat. I miss him even though he's been gone for 6 years.

I'm truly sorry for your loss. Every pet loss hurts the heart. Even our hamsters are hard to let go.

Oh, you are breaking my heart. I too had a BO named Sugar. Unfortunately, she had an egg misfire and filled up with fluid. We had the vet put her down about a month ago.

I agree with some of the previous posts, could you have someone help you dig a hole? What if you soak an area with water to soften, would that make it easier to dig? We have very heavy, clay soil where I live and that is my trick for being able to dig.

Oh, I'm just so sorry. Sending you a big virtual hug.

I don't know where you live but if you were near me I'd go dig you a hole for her. We bury all our animals that pass. If you were my child, I'd do like I do for my daughter. We have a little ceremony and then we place a small statue or something that is special to us on top of the grave. I really hope your parents open their eyes and see how bad you are hurting. Can't hug you in person, but here's some virtual ones..

I buried her. I did put her in a freezer but my mom started yelling at me, she said that I'm going to poison all the food.. She was in two plastic bags though. Whatever.
Anyways I remembered this mud hole where the laying flock is at so I dug there. I also buried a mealworm container with her because those were her favorites. Today we lost 3 more chickens due to the heat. One of them was one of my first chickens.. Her name was Maddy, I also lost 2 other first chickens earlier in the summer. Our group is down to 2 hens, the first group, we used to call them the 5 gang. Lost an easter egger, she was in a nestbox, lost a cochin who was right outside of a nestbox, as if she just collapsed out. I'm fearing for my last two firsts, Mama is broody and I don't want to lose her to the heat like the others have died. Moochie eats alot and I guess she could die too.
I have 3 broody silkies and a broody EE/silkie mix (the daughter of the dead EE) and out of fear my mom and I moved them into a grow-out pen with just water, food, and a roost for them. It's in the shade too.
I don't want to lose anymore chickens... I'm scared. Today it was 109 degrees. I also want another EE.. The one that died was the only one I had and I loved her green eggs. I'm gonna buy some misters for the chickens and my mom and I are going to look for shade trees at Home Depot. This summer is a bummer :(

I'm so sorry honey. I have all Silkies and I lost one last week to the heat. I completely understand. All you can do, is just check their water often, and provide shade. If you could buy some electrolyte powder from your local feed store, then you could put that in their water every time you re-filled it. That would help keep them hydrated better. Also, if there was any way you could provide a fan out near the chickens, that would help them a lot too. Just a couple ideas for you.

I truly hope that you don't lose anymore of your babies. Good Luck to you.

Do you have old water bottles that you could freeze? You could put a couple in with your broody to help her stay cool...you can also put them in the waterers to help that stay cold also. Frozen fruit is great for a hot treat, also.

So sorry for your losses

This summer is brutal.

I am so sorry about your losses. This heat is horrible. Freezing water bottles is a good idea. I'm glad you and your mom found a shady spot for the silkies. If you plant shade trees in this heat they will need lots and lots of water. Maybe you can find a pretty shade umbrella in the patio furniture section to put over part of the run.

HI sorry about your baby. you can wet the dirt and dig it alittle wet it.IT might take a minute or two.

I am so sorry for your loss!

I think it's best to remember how much you did for her. You didn't give up on her and gave her a great life.

As for the other chickens dealing with this heat, it's time to focus on them and save who you can. This year has been horrible for heat! If you haven't already looked at this thread, check it out, as there are many great suggestions:
